Summary: Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease that is spreading worldwide due to an aging population, with knee joints showing degenerative changes earlier than other joints. Intra-articular injection is a common treatment for knee osteoarthritis, but the effectiveness and uncertainties of intra-articular injection drugs are limited.

Summary: Hyaluronic acid (HA) use for knee osteoarthritis (OA) has been extensively studied, and there is a need to further understand the empirical data and health economic implications. This systematic review aims to identify and summarize the available evidence comparing commercially available HA products in the USA, as well as the health economic evidence and socioeconomic outcomes associated with HA use for knee OA.

Summary: This study presents an injectable hybrid hydrogel composed of hyaluronic acid and hexagonal boron nitride particles, mimicking the rheological properties of joint fluid. The research shows that this hydrogel exhibits good lubricating properties and has the potential to alleviate the symptoms of osteoarthritis, improving the quality of life for patients.

Summary: This meta-analysis suggests that platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections may be more effective than hyaluronic acid (HA) injections for treating knee osteoarthritis, and that leukocyte-poor PRP could be superior to leukocyte-rich PRP in terms of clinical outcomes.

Summary: This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of a novel drug, YYD302, administered through intra-articular injection, for knee osteoarthritis. The results showed that both 2 mL and 3 mL of YYD302 reduced pain and improved knee joint function.

Summary: The study demonstrates that a single intra-articular injection of the new HA derivative hydrogel, Hymovis MO.RE., provides significant efficacy and safety in improving knee function, pain, and quality of life for adult regular sports players with osteoarthritis. No severe adverse events were detected, indicating it may be a viable therapeutic option for this patient subgroup. Further investigations are needed to confirm these findings.

Summary: The synovial fluid of KOA patients is mainly composed of macrophages (69%) and lymphocytes (18%), and cytokines like IL-6 and IL-8 are common in the synovial fluid. The cytokines decrease significantly after the first injection and then stabilize, while lymphocytes increase and macrophages decrease in the early stage but increase after multiple injections. M1 and M2 cells are positively associated with IL-6 and IL-8.

Summary: In a randomized trial comparing two hyaluronic acid injections, Synolis VA demonstrated a response rate of 79%. The study suggests that poorer physical function at baseline is associated with a better response to treatment, while there is no direct correlation between pain levels and response rate. Further research is needed to explore potential confounding clinical variables for personalized medicine application.

Summary: We investigated the effects of hyaluronic acid (HA) injections on synovitis in knee osteoarthritis (OA). Our findings suggest that two ultrasound-guided HA injections following fluid drainage improved pain and knee function but did not significantly influence imaging-detected synovitis in patients with knee OA.

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of hypertonic dextrose prolotherapy compared to hyaluronic acid for knee osteoarthritis. The results showed that there were no significant differences in pain control between the two treatments in the short-term. However, in the subanalysis that included only the studies using intra-articular injection within the prolotherapy scheme, prolotherapy was found to have a positive effect on pain reduction and improvement of function. Better-quality clinical trials are still needed.

Summary: The study showed that a single injection of CHAP-HA is more effective and safe in knee osteoarthritis patients compared to three injections of linear HA, with pain relief effects lasting up to 52 weeks. CHAP-HA was found to be more preferable for patients with more severe OA, and repeat treatment or use of CHAP-HA after a three-injection HA was proven to be safe.

Summary: A systematic review of randomized controlled trials on total knee arthroplasty and total hip arthroplasty publications reveals a significant lack of inclusion of social determinants of health (SDOH) variables, such as race, ethnicity, insurance, income, and education. The exclusion of these variables may indirectly perpetuate disparities if research using non-representative patient samples is used in shaping health policies and national standards.
