Economic values of different fish traits are needed to direct breeding programs to optimize economic benefits for aquaculture industry. The aim of this article is to highlight and calculate how different traits affect the value of farmed fish supply chain. Supply chain approach is needed to calculate economic impact of fish traits because several fish traits affect costs and returns not only in fish farming but also at the processing and retail level. In this article, economic values are calculated for 14 productivity and product quality traits in European whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus). Productivity affecting traits, such as growth, mortality and different yields, are included in the study. In addition, economic values are calculated for several quality traits like fillet gaping, appearance and fat content of flesh. Productivity traits had the highest economic importance if the traits could be improved. However, quality traits may cause even higher economic losses, if the quality decreases. Thus, the management of the breeding program should pay simultaneous attention to both quality and productivity traits.

The role of energy reserves in common carp performance inferred from phenotypic and genetic parameters

Summary: This study investigated the genetic and phenotypic background of energy reserves in Amur mirror carp and their impact on fish performance during the first winter. Results showed most traits related to energy reserves significantly decreased after the first winter, with differing genetic correlations and heritability before and after the winter. Interestingly, genetic correlations between HP glycogen traits and survival in the third growing season were positive, suggesting a genetically based strategy for energy mobilization in common carp. Monitoring FC and HSI could be useful for managing carp stocks.

Off-flavors and lipid components in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) reared in RAS: Differences in families of low and high lipid contents

Summary: This study investigated the relationships between off-flavor compounds, lipid contents, and fatty acids in rainbow trout reared in a recirculating aquaculture system (RAS). The results showed that fish with high lipid contents accumulated high concentrations of off-flavor compounds, but these compounds were negatively correlated with health-promoting fatty acids. Excessive lipid contents may reduce the nutritional value of the fish.

Predicted genetic gain for carcass yield in rainbow trout from indirect and genomic selection

Silvia Garcia-Ballesteros, Jesus Fernandez, Antti Kause, Beatriz Villanueva

Summary: Carcass and fillet yields are economically important traits in aquaculture, and headless gutted carcass percentage (HC) is a convenient selection criterion. However, HC is a sib trait that cannot be recorded on selection candidates. This study compared different selection strategies for improving HC in rainbow trout breeding programs and found that a combination of genomic and indirect selection is the most effective approach.

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions through genetic selection in the Australian dairy industry

C. M. Richardson, P. R. Amer, C. Quinton, J. Crowley, F. S. Hely, I van den Berg, J. E. Pryce

Summary: This research examines options to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the Australian dairy industry, including integrating environmental factors into the national breeding program and assessing the economic and environmental impacts of implementing corresponding indexes. The findings show that significant methane reduction can be achieved with minimal economic loss by selecting breeding values correlated with emissions and directly selecting for residual methane traits.

Genome-wide association and genomic prediction of resistance to Flavobacterium columnare in a farmed rainbow trout population

Summary: This study demonstrates that selective breeding for improved resistance to columnaris disease in rainbow trout is feasible. A natural outbreak of the disease in a farm environment can be utilized to select fish with greater resistance, and genomic selection is an effective approach to expedite this process.

Improvement in feed efficiency and reduction in nutrient loading from rainbow trout farms: the role of selective breeding

Antti Kause, Antti Nousiainen, Heikki Koskinen

Summary: Improvement in feed conversion ratio (FCR) and reduction in nutrient loading in rainbow trout farming have significantly improved resource efficiency. Selective breeding has contributed to this improvement with an estimated genetic gain of 1.74% per generation in FCR. The use of genetically improved trout reduces feed and production costs.

Summary: This study conducted a comparative genetic analysis of the quantitative trait loci for resistance to warm water columnaris disease in two farmed rainbow trout populations. The results identified a major quantitative trait loci on chromosome Omy03 and a smaller quantitative trait loci on Omy05. These findings provide insights into the genetic basis of disease resistance and offer potential markers for breeding programs aiming to increase resistance against columnaris disease.
