The urban population (UP) measure is one of the most direct indicators that reflect the urbanization process and the impacts of human activities. The dynamics of UP is of great importance to studying urban economic, social development, and resource utilization. Currently, China lacks long time series UP data with consistent standards and comparability over time. The nighttime light images from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program's (DMSP) Operational Linescan System (OLS) allow the acquisition of continuous and highly comparable long time series UP information. However, existing studies mainly focus on simulating the total population or population density level based on the nighttime light data. Few studies have focused on simulating the UP in China. Based on three regression models (i.e., linear, power function, and exponential), the present study discusses the relationship between DMSP/OLS nighttime light data and the UP and establishes optimal regression models for simulating the UPs of 339 major cities in China from 1990 to 2010. In addition, the present study evaluated the accuracy of UP and non-agricultural population (NAP) simulations conducted using the same method. The simulation results show that, at the national level, the power function model is the optimal regression model between DMSP/OLS nighttime light data and UP data for 1990-2010. At the provincial scale, the optimal regression model varies among different provinces. The linear regression model is the optimal regression model for more than 60% of the provinces. In addition, the comparison results show that at the national, provincial, and city levels, the fitting results of the UP based on DMSP/OLS nighttime light data are better than those of the NAP. Therefore, DMSP/OLS nighttime light data can be used to effectively retrieve the UP of a large-scale region. In the context of frequent population flows between urban and rural areas in China and difficulty in obtaining accurate UP data, this study provides a timely and effective method for solving this problem.

A new multiple return-period framework of flood regulation service-applied in Yangtze River basin

Ju Shen, Shiqiang Du, Qun Ma, Qingxu Huang, Jiahong Wen, Zhan'e Yin, Jun Gao

Summary: This study proposes a new framework that integrates multiple flood return periods to assess the expected annual EFRS supply and demand in the Yangtze River Basin, China. The results show that EFRS demand increases dramatically with the return period, while EFRS supply remains relatively constant. Considering upstream EFRS supply can reduce the number of unsatisfied sub-basins, highlighting the importance of catchment-wide EFRS management.

Patterns and Distributions of Urban Expansion in Global Watersheds

Qingxu Huang, Han Zhang, Jasper van Vliet, Qiang Ren, Raymond Yu Wang, Shiqiang Du, Zhifeng Liu, Chunyang He

Summary: This study used a long-term multitemporal data set to analyze the spatiotemporal trends of urban expansion in endorheic and exoreic watersheds from 1992 to 2016, revealing that 70% of watersheds showed a decelerating trend in urban expansion. The speed of urban expansion in endorheic watersheds lagged behind exoreic watersheds, with the former approximately 1/4 of the latter. The pattern of urban expansion in endorheic watersheds was found to follow the low-density and sprawling trend observed in exoreic watersheds.

Mapping basin-scale supply-demand dynamics of flood regulation service-A case study in the Baiyangdian Lake Basin, China

Jian Li, Zihang Fang, Jinxi Zhang, Qingxu Huang, Chunyang He

Summary: This study explores the dynamic changes in the supply-demand relationship of Flood Regulation Service (FRS) in rapidly urbanizing basins. By proposing the Supply-Demand Ratio (SDR) method, the authors successfully quantify the supply and demand of FRS and find that the imbalance of FRS supply and demand intensifies and is related to rapid urbanization. Therefore, the authors suggest proactive policies be adopted to defend against flood disaster risks in future urban construction.

Evaluating the supply and demand of cultural ecosystem services in the Tibetan Plateau of China

Jinxi Zhang, Chunyang He, Qingxu Huang, Jian Li, Tao Qi

Summary: The Tibetan Plateau has a unique supply of cultural ecosystem services (CESs) with increasing demand due to rapid urbanization. However, research on the relationship between CESs supply and demand is lacking due to difficulties in obtaining empirical data. This study developed an approach using the SolVES model and social media big data to evaluate CESs supply and demand in the Qinghaihu-Huangshui basin. The results showed spatial mismatch between CESs supply and demand, with low subjective well-being in areas with high supply and low demand. Improving transportation systems to connect central cities with other counties is recommended to enhance regional sustainable development.
