Summary: This meta-analysis assesses the impact of intracameral cefuroxime injection as a prophylactic antibiotic on operative wound infection following cataract surgery. The results indicate that intracameral cefuroxime injection significantly reduces the risk of postoperative endophthalmitis compared to no antibiotic treatment.

Summary: Mathematical modeling was used to determine the most accurate method of delivering 500 mg moxifloxacin intracamerally, with the conclusion that injecting 0.5 to 0.6 mL x 150 μg/0.1 mL yields the closest result to the desired goal. Other methods had issues with achieving the target dose.

Summary: Endophthalmitis, a serious complication of cataract surgery, can be reduced by routine intracameral antibiotic injection. Studies show that intracameral cefuroxime decreases the incidence of postoperative endophthalmitis. The choice of antibiotic varies globally due to factors such as cost and causative organisms.

Summary: This study investigated the association of cefuroxime and moxifloxacin with the occurrence of endophthalmitis following phacoemulsification cataract surgery in patients in Northern California from 2014 to 2019. The relative risk of endophthalmitis was 1.62 for moxifloxacin-injected eyes compared to cefuroxime eyes. Organisms with antibiograms showed higher resistance in cefuroxime-injected eyes.

Summary: In this study of 7532 PPV procedures, intracameral cefuroxime was found to be a safe and effective choice for prophylaxis against endophthalmitis, with a lower incidence compared to subconjunctival administration. There were no cases of cefuroxime toxicity identified, but it was estimated that subconjunctival administration could lead to potentially toxic vitreous drug concentrations in certain cases.

Summary: Intraocular antibiotic delivery is crucial for preventing bacterial infection after ophthalmic surgery. A novel intraocular implant, MXF-HA, combining hyaluronic acid and moxifloxacin, was developed to enhance drug delivery efficiency. In vivo experiments demonstrated sustained delivery of moxifloxacin with MXF-HA, inhibiting bacterial growth for more than 5 days post-implantation. These findings suggest MXF-HA as a promising drug delivery method for bacterial infections post-surgery.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of prophylactic intracameral moxifloxacin on the microbiology profile and antimicrobial sensitivity of culture-proven postoperative endophthalmitis. The results showed that prophylactic intracameral moxifloxacin significantly reduced the incidence of postoperative endophthalmitis, especially coagulase-negative Staphylococci. However, the use of intracameral moxifloxacin may lead to a higher prevalence of endophthalmitis caused by rarer pathogens due to the reduction in commoner and more virulent pathogens.

Summary: Given the complex relationship between sleep and neurodegenerative processes, this study aimed to examine the association between sleep parameters and dementia incidence, and characterize the trajectories of sleep patterns before dementia diagnosis. The findings revealed that long sleep duration and earlier bedtime may impact dementia incidence. Trajectories of sleep durations and time in bed showed faster increases in dementia cases compared with controls up to 12 years before dementia onset.
