Pavement Marking Retroreflectivity and Crash Frequency: Segmentation, Line Type, and Imputation Effects

This paper investigates the effects of segment length, line types, and imputed retroreflectivity values on pavement-marking retroreflectivity and crash frequency analyses. Road data, crash data, pavement condition data, and pavement-marking retroreflectivity data from Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) databases were acquired and spatially integrated. Data sets for 1-, 3-, and 5-mi segments were prepared to investigate the effect of segmentation. Additional data sets with imputed and measured retroreflectivity data were prepared for comparison. A series of negative binomial regression analyses were run to estimate the expected number of crashes on varying segment lengths and data subsets based on the two retroreflectivity collection methods. The findings show that using smaller segments and data sets with measured retroreflectivity rather than imputed retroreflectivity leads to a more significant relationship between the retroreflectivity of longitudinal pavement markings and crash frequency. The findings also suggest that keeping longitudinal pavement markings in good condition has significant positive effects on safety. The results further suggested that the expected number of annual crashes significantly decreased with the increasing retroreflectivity of white-edge lines (WELs) and yellow-edge lines (YELs) for four-lane road segments. In addition, a significant relationship between pavement condition, measured with the International Roughness Index (IRI) and the expected number of crashes was found for all data sets.

Access to healthy food in urban and rural areas: An empirical analysis

Public acceptance of electric roadways: The case of Los Angeles, California

Understanding the public acceptance of the technology and evaluating the value of travel time savings on electric roadways can assist policymakers and transport operators in devising appropriate strategies.

The effect of location on physical activity: Implications for active travel

Exploration of the nexus between solar potential and electric vehicle uptake: A case study of Auckland, New Zealand

Summary: The joint deployment of solar photovoltaic systems and electric vehicles is a sustainable option for decarbonisation. However, the potential influence of solar PV on EV uptake within a spatial-temporal framework is often overlooked. This study uses a unique dataset in Auckland, New Zealand to examine the complementarity between EVs and solar PV. The findings suggest a positive relationship between solar PV installation and EV uptake, as well as the impact of charging infrastructure and early EV adoption on subsequent EV uptake.

Assessing highway revenue impacts of electric vehicles using a case study

Summary: This paper addresses the concerns of revenue loss in the long-term due to the increased adoption of electric vehicles, and proposes alternative funding mechanisms to recover the loss. The study is conducted in Indiana, U.S., and analyzes data on average vehicle miles travelled, fuel taxes, vehicle registrations, fuel efficiency and consumption. The findings provide optimal annual fees for different types of electric vehicles and discuss potential mitigation measures.

Riders' perceptions towards transit bus electrification: Evidence from Salt Lake City, Utah

Economic feasibility of in-motion wireless power transfer in a high-density traffic corridor
