Nitric oxide production and signalling in algae

Jeremy Astier, Jordan Rossi, Pauline Chatelain, Agnes Klinguer, Angelique Besson-Bard, Claire Rosnoblet, Sylvain Jeandroz, Valerie Nicolas-Frances, David Wendehenne

Summary: The study of nitric oxide in embryophytes and algae has deepened our understanding of its biological functions, including its production pathways, signaling networks, and regulated proteins. Interestingly, while some algae have a conserved nitric oxide synthase, the typical NO-cyclic GMP signaling module is not found in algae or embryophytes, showing a divergent acquisition of NO signaling between green and animal lineages.

Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes Modify Leaf Micromorphology, Chloroplast Ultrastructure and Photosynthetic Activity of Pea Plants

Violeta Velikova, Nia Petrova, Laszlo Kovacs, Asya Petrova, Dimitrina Koleva, Tsonko Tsonev, Stefka Taneva, Petar Petrov, Sashka Krumova

Summary: Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) have shown promising applications in biomedicine, pharmacology, and precision agriculture. Our study revealed that SWCNTs have a concentration-dependent effect on photosynthesis, with lower doses being beneficial for plant growth, while higher doses may impair photosynthetic function. Therefore, SWCNTs could be a potential nanocarrier for substances beneficial for plant growth in the future.

Polymer-Modified Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes Affect Photosystem II Photochemistry, Intersystem Electron Transport Carriers and Photosystem I End Acceptors in Pea Plants

Nia Petrova, Momchil Paunov, Petar Petrov, Violeta Velikova, Vasilij Goltsev, Sashka Krumova

Summary: The foliar application of polymer-grafted SWCNT affects the photosynthetic electron transport chain in a concentration-dependent manner, without influencing it at concentrations up to 100 mg/L. At 300 mg/L, SWCNT induces inactivation of photosystem II reaction centers and slows down the reduction of the plastoquinone pool and photosystem I end acceptors.

S-Nitrosation of Arabidopsis thaliana Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase 1 Prevents Its Irreversible Oxidation by Hydrogen Peroxide

Valerie Nicolas-Frances, Jordan Rossi, Claire Rosnoblet, Carole Pichereaux, Siham Hichami, Jeremy Astier, Agnes Klinguer, David Wendehenne, Angelique Besson-Bard

Summary: Arabidopsis thaliana protein tyrosine phosphatase 1 (AtPTP1) acts as a repressor of H2O2 production and regulates the activity of MAPKs. Exogenous H2O2 and NO directly inhibit the protein activity of AtPTP1, and the effect of NO is mediated by S-nitrosation, which protects the protein from H2O2-induced oxidation.

Origin, evolution, and future of isoprene and nitric oxide interactions within leaves

Violeta Velikova, Kaidala Ganesha Srikanta Dani, Francesco Loreto

Summary: Photolytic generation of nitric oxide (NO), isoprene, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) predates life on Earth. Isoprene-ROS-NO interactions became relevant to climate chemistry when isoprene-emitting diatoms and angiosperms dominated aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. NOx is a dangerous biogenic atmospheric pollutant, while isoprene acts as an antioxidant and hormone 'enabler' in plants. Isoprene-NO interactions vary among plant species and can impact growth and stress responses in a future NO-rich climate.

Seed Priming with Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes Grafted with Pluronic P85 Preserves the Functional and Structural Characteristics of Pea Plants

Sashka Krumova, Asya Petrova, Nia Petrova, Svetozar Stoichev, Daniel Ilkov, Tsonko Tsonev, Petar Petrov, Dimitrina Koleva, Violeta Velikova

Summary: In the past few decades, carbon nanotubes have been widely used in electronics, electrochemistry, and biomedicine. This study investigated the effect of seed priming with Pluronic P85 polymer grafted single-walled carbon nanotubes (P85-SWCNT) on Pisum sativum seed germination, plant development, leaf anatomy, and photosynthetic efficiency. The results showed that seed priming with P85-SWCNT did not negatively affect seed germination, plant development, leaf anatomy, biomass, and photosynthetic activity, but increased the number of active photosystem II centers in a concentration-dependent manner. However, P85 polymer exhibited negative effects on plant growth, possibly due to its unfavorable interaction with plant membranes. These findings suggest the potential of P85-SWCNT as nanocarriers for promoting plant growth and performance under various environmental stresses.
