Purpose. To evaluate the difference in biomechanical properties between contact lens induced corneal warpage and normal and keratoconic eyes. Method. Prospective observational case control study, where 94 eyes of 47 warpage suspicious and 46 eyes of 23 keratoconic patients were included. Warpage suspected cases were followed until a definite diagnosis was made (warpage, normal, or keratoconus). Results. 44 eyes of 22 patients had contact lens related corneal warpage. 46 eyes of 23 people were diagnosed as nonwarpage normal eyes. 46 eyes of 23 known keratoconus patients were included for comparison. The mean age of the participants was 23.8 +/- 3.8 years, and 66.2% of the subjects were female. The demographic and refractive data were not different between warpage and normal groups but were different in the keratoconus group. The biomechanical properties (corneal hysteresis or CH and corneal resistance factor or CRF) were different with the highest value in the warpage group followed by normal and keratoconus groups. CRF was 10.08 +/- 1.75, 9.23 +/- 1.22, and 7.38 +/- 2.14 and CH was 10.21 +/- 1.57, 9.59 +/- 1.21, and 8.69 +/- 2.34 in the warpage, normal, and keratoconus groups, respectively. Conclusion. Corneal biomechanics may be different in people who develop contact lens induced warpage.

Prevalence of uncorrected distance refractive errors and associated risk factors in employees of an academic centre

Parya Abdolalizadeh, Ramin Mehrdad, Bahar Saberzadeh-Ardestani, Hamidreza Pouragha, Fateme Alipour, Mehrdad Esmaili

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence of corrected and uncorrected refractive error (RE) in adult employees of a university and found that myopia was the only factor associated with uncorrected RE. Uncorrected RE may affect the work performance of employees.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis genotypes in an ethnically diverse area with millions of pilgrims and thousands of immigrants

Mostafa Naseri-Nezhad, Mahla Asadian, Mohammad Khalifeh Gholi, Mehdi Yaseri, Masoumeh Douraghi

Summary: This study used 24-locus MIRU-VNTR genotyping to identify the circulating Mycobacterium tuberculosis genotypes in Qom province. The results showed that about half of the isolates belonged to Afghan immigrants, which poses a risk to the situation of tuberculosis in Qom. The similarity between Afghan and Iranian genotypes provides evidence for the involvement of immigrants in the transmission of M. tuberculosis. This study is important for understanding the prevalence and distribution of M. tuberculosis genotypes, their association with risk factors, and the impact of immigration on the situation of tuberculosis in Qom province.

The causal effect of family physician program on the prevalence, screening, awareness, treatment, and control of hypertension and diabetes mellitus in an Eastern Mediterranean Region: a causal difference-in-differences analysis

Neda Mohammadi, Ahad Alizadeh, Sahar Saeedi Moghaddam, Erfan Ghasemi, Naser Ahmadi, Mehdi Yaseri, Negar Rezaei, Mohammad Ali Mansournia

Summary: This study investigates the causal effects of the family physician program (FPP) on the prevalence, screening, and awareness of hypertension (HTN) and diabetes mellitus (DM) in Iran. The results show that FPP has positive effects on HTN screening and control, but no causal effects on other factors such as prevalence, awareness, and treatment. For DM, FPP leads to significant improvements in screening and awareness, but a decrease in HTN treatment.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of collagen hydrolysate and omega-3 fatty acids on wound healing, metabolic disorders, and adipose-derived peptides in patients with major burns. The study found that adding collagen hydrolysate as part of adjunctive therapy can improve wound healing rate and quality. The efficacy of collagen hydrolysate and omega-3 fatty acids needs to be further confirmed in larger populations.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of refractive error (RE) and its association with other factors among people aged 50 years and above in Gilan, Iran in 2014. A total of 3281 individuals were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. The results showed that the prevalence of myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism was 19.2%, 48.6%, and 57.4% respectively. Factors such as age, body mass index, and education were found to be associated with RE.

Summary: The main objective of this study is to estimate a national value set of the EQ-5D-5L questionnaire for Iran. The cTTO and DCE methods, along with the EQ-PVT protocol, were used to estimate the value set. Through data analysis, a heteroscedastic censored Tobit hybrid model combining cTTO and DCE responses was identified as the best fitting model.
