Summary: This study found that the extent of surgery, type of device used, and head position can impact the effectiveness of nasal irrigation. High-volume irrigant devices are more effective, and head position plays a significant role in distributing the irrigant to the frontal sinus.

Summary: This study measured exhaled nasal NO tracings and performed computational fluid dynamics NO emission simulations to reveal that ethmoid sinuses contribute the most to total nasal NO emission and diffusion plays a greater role than convective transport. Turning off diffusion reduced the NO emission peaks by over 70%. These findings may significantly impact our understanding of nasal NO emission mechanisms and sinus physiopathology.

Summary: This study aimed to describe the outcomes and major prognostic factors of patients with inverted papilloma of the maxillary sinus (IPMS) treated with trans-nasal endoscopic medial maxillectomy (EMMs). The results showed that EMMs tailored to the surgical insertion point can effectively control IPMS and reduce the risk of recurrence.

Summary: The upper airway serves as the important part of the human respiratory tract, where the senses of olfaction and trigeminal sensation signal the quality of inhaled air. Trigeminal function complements taste and participates in the development of taste aversions. The stimulation of the upper airway triggers various respiratory and behavioral reflexes. Recent research has provided molecular insights into the mechanisms of olfaction, irritation, and gustation, as well as the physiological interactions between olfaction, taste, and trigeminal function. This review aims to summarize the expanding research in this sensory science sub-field and explore its clinical and therapeutic implications.

Summary: The study found that anterior part middle turbinoplasty can improve sinus accessibility during and after endoscopic sinus surgery, and reduce the incidence of post-operative synechia. Both groups showed significant improvements in post-operative SNOT-22 scores and smell item, with no significant adverse effects.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed the impact of functional septorhinoplasty with and without concha bullosa resection on sinonasal symptoms and nasal obstruction severity. The results showed that patients who underwent concha bullosa resection had higher nasal obstruction and sinonasal symptom scores before surgery, but experienced greater improvement after the surgery compared to those who did not undergo resection. Evaluating the middle turbinate before functional septorhinoplasty may be crucial for the surgical treatment of sinonasal symptoms.

Summary: This study compared the microbiota of pediatric patients with chronic rhinosinusitis undergoing adenoidectomy with healthy control patients. The results showed differences in microbiota composition and diversity between the nasopharynx and nasal cavity, but no significant differences in CRS patients compared to control patients. Environmental changes may contribute to the etiology of adenoid hypertrophy in both healthy controls and CRS patients.

Summary: Mucormycosis is a severe fungal infection that affects the sinuses. It can be classified into invasive or non-invasive and acute or chronic. Predisposing factors include underlying systemic disease, drug therapy, transplantation, and local lesions. Early identification and multidisciplinary treatment involving ENT, medicine, and radiology are crucial for preventing complications.

Summary: The study evaluated the concentration of penicillin G in bone samples of 19 patients with ARONJ following a single preoperative dose, showing that penicillin G concentrations were above the limit of detection in 16 out of 19 samples. This indicates that penicillin G provides adequate antimicrobial activity in the serum and osteonecrotic lesions of ARONJ patients.

Summary: This study investigated the association between red blood cell (RBC) transfusions and the occurrence of distant metastasis (M+) after surgical treatment of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). The study found a positive correlation between RBC transfusion and M+, suggesting that RBC transfusions may be an independent prognostic factor. Therefore, caution should be taken in the perioperative management of OSCC patients regarding the administration of RBC transfusions.

Summary: This study investigated comorbidity of the hip following deep circumflex iliac artery (DCIA) graft raising using CAD/CAM techniques. The results showed a significant correlation between graft volume and skin incision length with postoperative donor site morbidity. The study suggests that a minimally invasive approach could help reduce postoperative symptomatology in CAD/CAM surgery.
