Summary: This study evaluated trends in transfusion associated with knee arthroplasties in Korea using nationwide data. The results showed a high rate of blood transfusion among patients undergoing knee arthroplasties, although the overall transfusion rate had declined from 2012 to 2018. Surgeons need to develop patient blood management plans and minimize the use of allogeneic transfusion.

Summary: In OECD countries, pharmaceutical spending reached around 800 billion USD in 2013. A study in South Korea focused on high-cost users (HCUs) found that age and multiple chronic conditions were strongly associated with HCUs. Measures are needed to reduce drug prescriptions in patients without complex comorbidities and target HCUs without multiple chronic conditions.

Summary: The study found that the rate of immediate breast reconstruction (IBR) following total mastectomy (TM) increased in patients after the Korean National Health Insurance (NHI) started reimbursing a portion of the breast reconstruction surgery costs for breast cancer patients. Insured patients were more likely to undergo IBR compared to uninsured patients.

Summary: Using the Korean National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort database, this study investigated the relationship between gout and the risk of developing colorectal cancer (CRC). The findings suggest that gout may not significantly and independently contribute to the risk of CRC in the general population, but there may be a slight reduction in the likelihood of CRC among patients younger than 65 years with gout.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the association between autoimmune diseases and lymphoma incidence in Korean population, as well as compare the overall survival in patients with AID-associated lymphoma. The results showed that AID patients have a higher risk of developing lymphoma, and the risk increases with certain autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus and multiple sclerosis. Additionally, the 5-year overall survival in AID-associated lymphoma was found to be similar to that in lymphoma patients without AID.

Summary: This study analyzed the trends and impact of influenza vaccination rates in South Korea, focusing on target groups such as children, pregnant women, and individuals with chronic diseases. The results showed discrepant vaccination rates among these groups, which correlated with their financial coverage under the National Immunization Program. The recent expansion of financial aids to children and pregnant women led to significant increases in their vaccination rates. The study suggests that free vaccination policy is effective in enhancing coverage and calls for its expansion to other under-vaccinated target groups, especially individuals with chronic diseases.

Summary: Menopause is a hormone-deficiency state that causes various symptoms such as facial flushing, vaginal dryness, and depression. Hormone-replacement therapy is commonly used, but it has side effects. In this study, a complex extract of Polygonatum sibiricum and Nelumbinis semen was found to improve menopause symptoms without side effects by increasing the expression of ER beta and restoring vaginal epithelial cell thickness. It also improved blood-lipid metabolism and alleviated osteoporosis. Therefore, it could be a natural treatment option for menopause.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of pharmacopuncture therapy compared to physiotherapy for treating adhesive capsulitis. The study will be conducted as a randomized controlled trial with 50 participants receiving either pharmacopuncture therapy or physiotherapy over a 6-week period. The primary outcome measure is the numeric rating scale for shoulder pain, and secondary outcomes include various other measures of pain and disability. Analysis will be based on the intention-to-treat principle.

Summary: This study analyzed the distribution and healthcare usage patterns of patients with atopic dermatitis using the 2010-2018 Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service data. The prevalence of atopic dermatitis showed a decreasing trend over time among patients aged <5, 5-14, and 15-24 years. The most commonly used Western medicine treatments were injections and oral medications involving topical corticosteroids, antihistamine agents, and oral steroids, while acupuncture therapy was the most used Korean medicine treatment.

Summary: Limited knowledge exists on the impact of neoadjuvant and adjuvant treatments on post-surgery lymphedema (LE) in breast cancer patients. A study using a national cohort from the Korean National Health Insurance Service database found that while minimal lymph node dissection reduced LE risk, neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by lymph node dissection did not. Adjusting for adjuvant chemotherapy decreased LE risk in the lymph node dissection group, but not mortality risk. Longer duration of neoadjuvant chemotherapy, especially taxane-based, combined with lymph node dissection increased LE risk. This highlights the importance of early and long-term surveillance to reduce LE risk.
