Subtotal gastrectomy (i.e., partial removal of the stomach), a surgical treatment for early-stage distal gastric cancer, is usually accompanied by highly selective vagotomy and Billroth II reconstruction, leading to dramatic changes in the gastric environment. Based on accumulating evidence of a strong link between human gut microbiota and host health, a 2-year follow-up study was conducted to characterize the effects of subtotal gastrectomy. Gastric microbiota and predicted gene functions inferred from 16S rRNA gene sequencing were analyzed before and after surgery. The results demonstrated that gastric microbiota is significantly more diverse after surgery. Ralstonia and Helicobacter were the top two genera of discriminant abundance in the cancerous stomach before surgery, while Streptococcus and Prevotella were the two most abundant genera after tumor excision. Furthermore, N-nitrosation genes were prevalent before surgery, whereas bile salt hydrolase, NO and N2O reductase were prevalent afterward. To our knowledge, this is the first report to document changes in gastric microbiota before and after surgical treatment of stomach cancer.

Subsequent Primary Cancers of the Digestive System Among Childhood and Adolescent Cancer Survivors From 1975 to 2015 in the United States

Jason J. Liu, Chuan-Yu Chen, Edward Giovannucci, Chun-Ying Wu

Summary: The study found that survivors of childhood and adolescent cancers diagnosed from 1975 to 2015 have significantly elevated risks of developing digestive system cancers compared to the general population in the US. Among the 41,249 cancer survivors, 133 developed subsequent primary digestive system cancer, with bone cancer, lymphoma, and neuroblastoma survivors having the highest risks. The findings suggest the need for surveillance recommendations for childhood and adolescent cancer survivors and further studies to understand the mechanisms behind the increased risks of digestive system cancers.

Infantile infection and antibiotic exposure in association with pediatric psoriasis development: A nationwide nested case-control study

Summary: The study found that skin infections at an early age, especially viral, bacterial, and fungal infections in the first 2 years of life, were significantly associated with the development of pediatric psoriasis. Results also showed that atopic dermatitis and family history of psoriasis, particularly from the mother or other first-degree relatives, were independently associated with pediatric psoriasis.

Summary: This study investigated the differences in gut microbiota composition among hemodialysis patients receiving different anti-acid drugs, revealing that PPI significantly altered the gut microbiota compared to H-2 blocker users or controls. Importantly, there was a significant enrichment of the genus Streptococcus in PPI users.

Imiquimod Accelerated Antitumor Response by Targeting Lysosome Adaptation in Skin Cancer Cells

Summary: This study found that IMQ induced lysosomal membrane permeabilization and dysfunction, as well as increased lysosome biogenesis for lysosomal adaptation in cancer cells. The induction of lysosomal adaptation by IMQ occurred through lysosomal calcium ion release and activation of the calcineurin/TFEB axis to promote lysosome biogenesis.

Association of Immunosuppressants with Mortality of Patients with Bullous Pemphigoid: A Nationwide Population-Based Cohort Study

Chen-Yi Wu, Chun-Ying Wu, Chung-Pin Li, Yi-Hsian Lin, Yun-Ting Chang

Summary: The use of immunosuppressants was found to be associated with a reduced risk of mortality in patients with bullous pemphigoid. The mortality rate over five years was significantly lower in the group using immunosuppressants compared to those using only corticosteroids. The most substantial decrease in mortality risk was observed in patients under 70 years of age.

Once-daily tenofovir disoproxil fumarate in treatment-naive Taiwanese patients with chronic hepatitis B and minimally raised alanine aminotransferase (TORCH-B): a multicentre, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group, randomised trial

Summary: The study investigated the efficacy and safety of tenofovir disoproxil fumarate in reducing disease progression in patients with non-cirrhotic chronic hepatitis B and minimally raised ALT. The results showed that tenofovir disoproxil fumarate can reduce the risk of liver fibrosis progression, but its effect on necroinflammation is not significant.
