Summary: This study investigated the effect of weight loss surgery on insulin kinetics. The results showed that the altered insulin clearance rate after surgery is mainly attributed to the liver rather than other organs. In addition, the endogenous insulin clearance rate is more sensitive to the increase in circulating insulin levels, while peripheral insulin sensitivity is similar among the three groups. After a meal, the weight loss surgery group had higher insulin secretion, independent of glycemic levels. Compared to sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass surgery resulted in greater post-meal insulin secretion and a reduction in post-meal insulin clearance rate.

Summary: This study investigated the cumulative incidence of osteoporotic fracture in gastric cancer survivors according to treatment modality. The results showed that total gastrectomy increased the risk of osteoporotic fracture compared to subtotal gastrectomy and endoscopic mucosal dissection and resection. Further research is needed to establish an optimal strategy for each type of surgery.

Summary: Roux-en Y gastric bypass surgery and sleeve gastrectomy alter postprandial glucose metabolism, increasing the risk of hypoglycemia. After surgery, there is a reduced hepatic glucose production response during insulin-induced hypoglycemia. However, the counterregulatory response to hypoglycemia is similar among individuals with surgery and without surgery.

Summary: Pregnancy and the microbiome have complex interactions that affect host metabolism, particularly in hepatic metabolic processes. Research has shown that the presence or absence of the microbiome can impact specific metabolic pathways in pregnant mice, providing new insights into the role of the microbiome in modulating metabolic processes during pregnancy.

Summary: This single-center retrospective study compared outcomes of robotic subtotal gastrectomy (RsTG) and robotic total gastrectomy (RTG) in treating gastric cancer patients. RsTG had shorter operation time, less intraoperative blood loss, lower complication rate, higher serum albumin levels, and better postoperative bodyweight recovery compared to RTG.

Summary: The study revealed that extracellular vesicles in the intestines of mice after VSG were enriched, with a significantly different protein composition compared to before VSG. VSG-derived extracellular vesicles exhibited cytotoxic effects on intestinal epithelial cells and reduced proliferation of intestinal progenitor cells in mice.

Summary: This study investigated the microbial changes and host inflammatory cytokine responses in H. pylori-negative gastric cancer patients. The results showed that the gastric mucosal microbiota in GC patients had reduced diversity and a different composition compared to controls. Lacticaseibacillus was enriched, while Haemophilus and Campylobacter were depleted in the cancer group. Furthermore, the combined abundance of these taxa correlated significantly with gastric mucosal IL1B expression.

Summary: This study evaluated the safety and efficacy of subtotal gastrectomy with Roux-en-Y reconstruction as a remedial procedure for patients with gastroparesis and recurrent reflux after previous fundoplication. The results showed that this procedure is a moderately safe and effective option for patients with post-fundoplication reflux and delayed gastric emptying symptoms.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed data from 134 patients who underwent subtotal D2 gastrectomy for locally advanced gastric cancer and compared the short-term and surgical outcomes between laparoscopic and open gastrectomy procedures. The results showed that laparoscopic surgery had shorter surgical time, less blood loss, faster postoperative recovery, and shorter hospital stay compared to open gastrectomy. There were no differences in surgical morbidity and mortality rates, as well as disease-free survival and overall survival rates, between the two groups. Therefore, laparoscopic gastrectomy is a feasible and safe treatment option for locally advanced gastric cancer.

Summary: Objective of this study was to investigate the effect of Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection on gastric mucosal microbiota in patients with chronic gastritis. The study found that virulent Hp infection alters gastric microbiota, reduces microbial diversity, and enhances the symbiotic relationship between Helicobacter bacteria and non-Helicobacter bacteria in patients with chronic gastritis. These findings provide new evidence for treating Hp infection by improving gastric microbiota.

Summary: The study found that survivors of childhood and adolescent cancers diagnosed from 1975 to 2015 have significantly elevated risks of developing digestive system cancers compared to the general population in the US. Among the 41,249 cancer survivors, 133 developed subsequent primary digestive system cancer, with bone cancer, lymphoma, and neuroblastoma survivors having the highest risks. The findings suggest the need for surveillance recommendations for childhood and adolescent cancer survivors and further studies to understand the mechanisms behind the increased risks of digestive system cancers.

Summary: This study found that IMQ induced lysosomal membrane permeabilization and dysfunction, as well as increased lysosome biogenesis for lysosomal adaptation in cancer cells. The induction of lysosomal adaptation by IMQ occurred through lysosomal calcium ion release and activation of the calcineurin/TFEB axis to promote lysosome biogenesis.
