Summary: Cyclic nucleotide-gated ion channels in olfactory sensory neurons have three types of homologous subunits. The study found that the activation process of the channels is cooperatively influenced by the subunits, while the energy required for channel opening is independent of subunit cooperativity.

Summary: The cryo-EM structure of the human cone photoreceptor CNG channel reveals an unusual subunit stoichiometry and unique structural features due to a distinct subunit, contributing to the understanding of cone CNG channel physiology and channelopathies. This study provides insight into the critical role of CNGB3 in shaping cone photoresponses, highlighting the importance of its structural features and disease mutations in determining visual function.

Summary: The problem of global warming and rising oil prices is driving the implementation of solutions to reduce liquid fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, including the use of natural gas as an energy source. This article presents the test results of a compressed natural gas (CNG) supply system installed in a used semi-truck, showing that the diesel/CNG-fueled engine can significantly reduce CO2 concentration but increase the concentration of other harmful gases.

Summary: The study reveals that immature olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs) play a crucial role in the olfactory bulb (OB) circuit of mice by providing odor input and forming monosynaptic connections with excitatory neurons. Immature OSNs show stronger selective responses to odorants and graded responses across a wider range of odorant concentrations compared to mature OSNs. Furthermore, mice can successfully perform odor detection and discrimination tasks using sensory input from immature OSNs alone.

Summary: Odor perception starts from the detection of odorant molecules by the main olfactory epithelium in the nasal cavity. The molecules then activate a large family of G-protein-coupled odorant receptors and trigger a cAMP-mediated transduction cascade, converting the chemical stimulus into an electrical signal sent to the brain. Moreover, odorant receptors and cAMP signaling are key players in the development of olfactory sensory neurons and their axonal targeting to the olfactory bulb.

Summary: This study presents a novel strategy to selectively modulate the activity of rod or cone photoreceptors using cGMP analogues with opposing actions. This strategy may address the issue of isoform-specificity in pharmacological therapies and improve visual performance in certain light environments.

Summary: The reliance of modern society on indoor environments has increased, making them important sites for human exposure to microbes. This study examined the distribution of microbes at different locations within a single home and identified potential pathogens and microbial functions using PacBio Sequel full-length amplicon sequencing. The results showed significant differences in microbial communities among indoor sampling sites, with potential pathogens significantly enriched on door handles. The study also highlighted the role of microbial interactions in the development of a healthy immune system.

Summary: Calcium ion channels play crucial roles in various biological functions and their dysfunction can lead to diseases. Traditional techniques have limitations in understanding the structure-function relationship of ion channels, which can be partially overcome by optogenetics. Optogenetics has significantly advanced our understanding of Ca2+ signaling proteins and their manipulation in biological processes.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted our limited understanding of human olfactory physiology. By using acute slices of human olfactory epithelium and whole-cell patch-clamp technique, this study characterized the electrical properties of olfactory sensory neurons and supporting cells. The study also demonstrated the intact transduction cascade in this preparation through responses to odorant mixtures. This research provides valuable insights into human olfactory physiology and lays the foundation for future studies.
