Large net forest loss in Cambodia's Tonle Sap Lake protected areas during 1992-2019

Aifang Chen, Anping Chen, Olli Varis, Deliang Chen

Summary: Historical land-use practices have caused significant forest loss and fragmentation in Cambodia's Tonle Sap Lake area. Despite the establishment of protected areas in 2001, forest loss continued until 2010. While net forest loss stopped after 2010, the level of forest regain was insufficient to restore the region's total forest area. More effective planning and implementation of forest management and restoration policies are needed for the area.

Piperlongumine synergistically enhances the antitumour activity of sorafenib by mediating ROS-AMPK activation and targeting CPSF7 in liver cancer

Liyun Zheng, Shiji Fang, Aifang Chen, Weiqian Chen, Enqi Qiao, Minjiang Chen, Gaofeng Shu, Dengke Zhang, Chunli Kong, Qiaoyou Weng, Suqin Xu, Zhongwei Zhao, Jiansong Ji

Summary: Sorafenib is a first-line agent for advanced liver cancer, but drug resistance affects its efficacy. In this study, we demonstrated that piperlongumine (PL) enhances the cytotoxicity of sorafenib in liver cancer cells by inducing ROS generation, mitochondrial dysfunction, and apoptosis. Activation of the AMPK signaling pathway and disruption of RNA processing are involved in the antitumour activity of PL and sorafenib combination treatment.

Spatial Aggregation of Global Dry and Wet Patterns Based on the Standard Precipitation Index

Yanlong Guan, Junguo Liu, Aifang Chen, Delong Li, Yelin Jiang, Wenhui Cui, Hongwei Lu, Petri Pellikka, Janne Heiskanen, Eduardo Maeda

Summary: This study examines the spatial aggregation changes in dry and wet areas over land, using data from 1949 and 2018. The results show that the global aggregation degree initially increased and then weakened, but the spatial aggregation process between dry and wet patterns was inconsistent. The study also found that the correlation between the affected area and aggregation strengthened with increases in the dry/wet magnitude.

Lengthening Dry Spells Intensify Summer Heatwaves

Bin He, Ziqian Zhong, Deliang Chen, Junguo Liu, Yaning Chen, Chiyuan Miao, Ruiqiang Ding, Wenping Yuan, Lanlan Guo, Ling Huang, Xingming Hao, Aifang Chen

Summary: Regional studies have reported a lengthening of dry spells (DSLs), but the link between DSLs and heatwaves is still unclear on a global scale. This study examines the increase in DSLs during summer over the global continents using precipitation records. The findings show that the average DSL has increased by 0.46 day/decade since the 1970s, along with increased high-pressure anomalies. These findings suggest that precipitation variations associated with changes in DSLs should be considered in attributions of temperature extremes.

Flood inundation in the Lancang-Mekong River Basin: Assessing the role of summer monsoon

Jie Wang, Qiuhong Tang, Xiaobo Yun, Aifang Chen, Siao Sun, Dai Yamazaki

Summary: This study investigates the impact of different monsoon types and their combined effect on flood inundation characteristics in the Langcang-Mekong River Basin (LMRB). The results show that the monsoons and their combined effect overall have a positive impact on inundation frequency, depth, and area. The timing of inundation is usually advanced when the Western North Pacific Monsoon (WNPM) or the monsoon combined effect strengthens, but delayed when the Indian summer monsoon (ISM) strengthens.

Expression patterns of serum MicroRNAs related to endothelial dysfunction in patients with subclinical hypothyroidism

Xuelin Yao, Ying Wang, Li Wang, Mingfeng Cao, Aifang Chen, Xinhuan Zhang

Summary: This study analyzed the expression profiles of serum microRNAs in patients with subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) to explore the mechanism of atherosclerosis (ATH) in SCH and the association between ATH and SCH. The results suggest that miR-21-5p may be involved in the atherosclerosis process in patients with SCH, while miR-150-5p may be a sensitive risk marker for predicting endothelial dysfunction in patients with ATH.
