Muyocopron species are associated with a wide variety of plant substrates worldwide and presently 57 species epithets are listed in Index Fungorum. Species in this genus form distinctive black, dull, rounded regions on the surface of plants and the genus is probably polyphyletic. The present study clarifies the phylogenetic placement of Muyocopron and related species, using fresh tropical collections from northern Thailand. Three Muyocopron species are characterized based on analyses of combined LSU and SSU sequence datasets. Phylogenetic analyses indicate that Muyocopron species form a distinct lineage with the Dyfrolomycetales and Acrospermales lineages. The new order Muyocopronales with three new Muyocopron species is introduced based on its distinct phylogeny and unique morphological characteristics. The taxonomy and phylogenetic relationships of tropical Muyocopron species are reappraised with suggestions for future work.

Li-su Han, Dong-qin Dai, Tian-ye Du, Nalin N. Wijayawardene, Itthayakorn Promputtha, D. Jayarama Bhat, Yong Gao

Summary: A sample of bambusicolous ascomycete was collected from Dali, Yunnan Province, China. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the new collection belongs to a new species, Parabambusicola yunnanensis, which is basal to other Parabambusicola species. Morphological characteristics, such as 8-spored asci and fusiform to vermiform ascospores, further supported its classification.

Taxonomy and phylogeny of Hypoxylon zhaotongensis sp. nov. (Hypoxylaceae, Xylariales), a bambusicolous fungus from Yunnan, China

Gui-Qing Zhang, Dong-Qin Dai, Nalin N. Wijayawardene, Itthayakorn Promputtha, D. Jayarama Bhat, Turki M. Dawoud, Saowaluck Tibpromma, Xiao-Mei Wei

Summary: Several saprobic fungi associated with dead bamboo culms were collected during a survey in Yunnan Province, southwestern China, and initially identified as species belonging to Xylariales (Sordariomycetes) based on morphology. A new species, Hypoxylon zhaotongensis, from bamboo, was established, and molecular analyses using multiple gene sequences confirmed its phylogenetic placement. The new taxon differs from known Hypoxylon species in its morphological characteristics, such as broader asci and ascospores with a conspicuously straight germ-slit, which is shorter than the spore length. The paper provides a detailed description, photo-plate, and a phylogenetic tree displaying the taxonomic placement of the new species.

Li-Juan Zhang, Ming-Fei Yang, Jian Ma, Xing-Juan Xiao, Xiao-Yan Ma, De-Ge Zheng, Mei-Yan Han, Ming-Lei Xia, Ruvishika S. Jayawardena, Ausana Mapook, Yuan-Pin Xiao, Ji-Chuan Kang, Yong-Zhong Lu

Summary: Two new polyketides, neogrisphenol A (1) and neogrisphenol B (2), one new isochroman-1-one (3), and four known compounds (4-7) were isolated from the rice fermentation product of Neohelicosporium griseum, a new record fungus. Their structures were determined using various analytical techniques. Compounds 1-2 and 5 showed antibacterial activity against multiple bacteria strains, while compound 5 exhibited antifungal activity against two different fungi strains. Compound 1 also demonstrated significant cytotoxicity against several cancer cell lines.

Rong-Ju Xu, Ying-An Zhu, Ning-Guo Liu, Saranyaphat Boonmee, De-Qun Zhou, Qi Zhao

Summary: During the investigation, 15 collections of lignicolous freshwater fungi were isolated from submerged decaying wood in the Tibetan Plateau habitat. These fungi display characteristic punctiform or powdery colonies with dark pigmented and muriform conidia. Phylogenetic analysis of their DNA sequences revealed that they belong to three families in Pleosporales. Out of these, four species were identified as new species, while three species were reported as new records in the freshwater habitats of Tibetan Plateau, China. This study provides morphological descriptions and illustrations of the new collections.

Plant-Fungi Interactions: Where It Goes?

A. K. Hasith Priyashantha, Dong-Qin Dai, Darbhe J. J. Bhat, Steven L. L. Stephenson, Itthayakorn Promputtha, Prashant Kaushik, Saowaluck Tibpromma, Samantha C. C. Karunarathna

Summary: Fungi can form various associations with plants, including pathogenic and symbiotic relationships. Pathogenic fungi cause diseases in plants and exert pressure on their survival. On the other hand, plants benefit from interactions with symbiotic fungi. Changes in climate can influence the interactions between plants and fungi, either positively or negatively. This paper explores these interactions and their importance in agricultural practices.
