Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are transcribed by genomic regions (exceeding 200 nucleotides in length) that do not encode proteins. While the exquisite regulation of lncRNA transcription can provide signals of malignant transformation, lncRNAs control pleiotropic cancer phenotypes through interactions with other cellular molecules including DNA, protein, and RNA. Recent studies have demonstrated that dysregulation of lncRNAs is influential in proliferation, angiogenesis, metastasis, invasion, apoptosis, stemness, and genome instability in colorectal cancer (CRC), with consequent clinical implications. In this review, we explicate the roles of different lncRNAs in CRC, and the potential implications for their clinical application.

A method for colocalizing lineage tracing reporter and RNAscope signals on skeletal tissue section

Summary: A method has been developed to simultaneously detect and colocalize fluorescent lineage tracing reporter signals and RNAscope signals in skeletal tissue without compromising fidelity, sensitivity, and specificity. The method allows for versatile applications such as determining gene knockout efficacy at the mRNA level, detecting alterations in target gene transcripts in reporter-positive cells caused by specific gene mutations, and studying disease pathology by examining transcript-level expression of genes in a specific cell lineage in vivo.

Summary: This study found that long non-coding RNAs play key roles as regulatory molecules in aging-related apoptosis effects. Additionally, besides promoting apoptosis, aging also inhibits myocardial apoptosis after hypoxia/reoxygenation.

Summary: Insulin resistance in the heart is a characteristic of diabetic cardiac injury. The molecular mechanisms underlying this resistance are not yet understood. Recent studies have shown that the diabetic heart is also resistant to other cardioprotective interventions. The role of Cav3 in diabetic impairment of cardiac protective signaling and diabetic ischemic heart failure needs further investigation.
