This paper develops closed-loop supply chain models with alliance recycling under two financing systems for recycling used products, that is, pay-as-you-throw (PAYT) and recycling fund (RF). The primary goal behind analytic formulation is to investigate the differences between the two financing systems and determine which one performs better, and to examine the impact of target recycling rate and competition between recycling alliances (RAs) on channel decisions. We find that the PAYT system is always more beneficial to customers and the retailer, while the RF system increases the social welfare. If there is no competition between RAs, which system performs better for the RA depends on the baseline of subsidy fee, while which system performs better for manufacturers depends on their shares. However, if there is competition between RAs, the RF system is favored by the disadvantaged RA. Moreover, the restriction on target recycling rate has an effect on channel decisions.

The price of anarchy in closed-loop supply chains

Zu-Jun Ma, Yu-Sen Ye, Ying Dai, Hong Yan

Summary: This paper examines the worst-case efficiency of price-only contracts in closed-loop supply chains and investigates how different reverse channel structures influence the performance. The study finds that the push and pull systems have different efficiencies in different situations and that direct collection by the manufacturer is a better choice.

Optimal Subsidy Schemes and Budget Allocations for Government-Subsidized Trade-in Programs

Jiaru Bai, Shu Hu, Luyi Gui, Kut C. So, Zu-Jun Ma

Summary: This study investigates the design of government subsidy programs aimed at speeding up consumer trade-ins of used products, focusing on optimal allocation of subsidy budget and effective incentivization of consumer trade-ins. Results suggest that a sharing subsidy scheme is more effective than fixed-amount subsidies, and products with specific characteristics may require larger subsidy budget allocation.

Blood component preparation-inventory problem with stochastic demand and supply

Qinhong Li, Zujun Ma, Fei Yang

Summary: The study introduces a dynamic programming model for optimizing blood component preparation and inventory management, as well as proposing an approximate dynamic programming method to cope with uncertain characteristics. Results show superior performance compared to current preparation methods in North America, Europe, and China, offering a helpful guide for blood component preparation and inventory management in blood banks.

Optimal joint trade-in rebate strategies in a retailer-led supply chain

Fei Tang, Ying Dai, Zu-Jun Ma

Summary: This study investigates the joint trade-in rebate strategies in a supply chain with independent manufacturers and a dominant retailer. It finds that a differentiated rebate scheme benefits the retailer, while cooperation among manufacturers leads to win-win outcomes. However, replacement consumers may benefit from a uniform rebate scheme and non-cooperation among manufacturers, which is more environmentally friendly.

Dynamic pricing for the successive-generation products in the presence of strategic customers and limited trade-in duration

Xigang Yuan, Zujun Ma, Xiaoqing Zhang

Summary: This paper investigates the dynamic pricing strategy of a firm for successive-generation products under the conditions of limited trade-in duration and strategic customers. It explores the effect of limited trade-in duration on the choice behavior of myopic and strategic customers, as well as the optimal dynamic pricing and trade-in strategy of the firm. The authors develop a two-period game-theoretic analytical model and find that extending the limited trade-in duration and implementing a dynamic pricing strategy is better for profit maximization. The results also suggest using a dual rollover strategy instead of a single rollover one.

Service quality and price competition in crowdsourced delivery markets

Shan He, Zujun Ma

Summary: This study focuses on the service quality and pricing strategies of on-demand crowdsourced delivery platforms (CDPs), exploring two different competition scenarios: pure price competition and joint price and service quality competition. The results show that quality differences create differentiated equilibrium prices under pure price competition, while CDPs set the same service quality and price under joint price and service quality competition.

Dynamics Analysis and Optimal Control for a Delayed Rumor-Spreading Model

Chunru Li, Zujun Ma

Summary: By analyzing a delayed rumor-propagation model, this work investigates the existence and stability of the model's solutions and the rumor-endemic equilibrium. The study reveals that the delay can result in Hopf bifurcation and chaos.

Dynamics of a delayed rumor spreading model with discontinuous threshold control

Chunru Li, Zujun Ma, Yuanyuan Wang

Summary: This paper studies a delayed rumor spreading model with discontinuous threshold control. The existence of equilibria, local stability, and Hopf bifurcation of the positive equilibrium are analyzed using characteristic equations. The study also examines the existence of sliding mode and the stability of different types of equilibria. Numerical simulations are provided to validate the theoretical results.

EVOLUTIONARY GAME THEORY ANALYSIS OF SUPPLY CHAIN WITH FAIRNESS CONCERNS OF RETAILERS

Yadong Shu, Ying Dai, Zujun Ma

Summary: This study uses evolutionary game analysis to examine supply chain strategies with fairness concerns. The study finds that the effect of distributional fairness concerns on pricing decisions differ from peer-induced fairness concerns. In the long-term, only one evolutionarily stable equilibrium point exists.

Do incentives work to motivate voluntary blood donation?

Yuwen Gong, Ying Dai, Zujun Ma, Jianguo Li

Summary: Based on previous research, this study investigated the effectiveness of two blood donation incentives-eligibility for free blood transfusions and improving individual credit scores-and their underlying psychological mechanisms. Four studies were conducted to explore the relationship between incentives and blood donation intention. The results showed that eligibility for free blood transfusions was more effective, mediated by perceived attractiveness, compared to improving individual credit scores, which had a lower effectiveness due to the mediating effect of perceived threat to freedom. With the moderating variable of involvement, there was no difference between the two incentives in the high-involvement group due to weakened mediating effects of perceived threat to freedom and perceived attractiveness. This study establishes two effect paths explaining the effectiveness of incentives on blood donation intention.

To offer or not to offer? The optimal value-insured strategy for crowdsourced delivery platforms

Shan He, Ying Dai, Zu-Jun Ma

Summary: This study examines the impact of value-insured strategy provided by crowdsourced delivery platforms (CDPs) on the decisions of the platforms and the participation behaviors of senders and couriers. The research finds that introducing a value-insured strategy benefits the CDP only when the courier's sensitivity to the declared value is adequate. The optimal insurance scheme for the CDP depends on the average declared value, with the reinsurance scheme producing the highest profit when the value is below a certain threshold, and the fixed-fee scheme when it is above the threshold. Offering a value-insured service does not always increase consumer surplus, labor welfare, and social welfare, and may not necessarily benefit the CDP.

Trade-in operations under retail competition: Effects of brand loyalty*

Fei Tang, Ying Dai, Zu-Jun Ma, Tsan-Ming Choi

Summary: Trade-in promotions are recognized as effective strategies in retail operations to boost sales. This study examines the impact of brand loyalty on exclusive and nonexclusive trade-in programs and finds that an exclusive trade-in program effectively retains consumers when brand loyalty is weak, while a nonexclusive trade-in program is more likely to attract competitors' consumers. An exclusive trade-in program is the dominant strategy for both firms compared to no trade-in, but a nonexclusive program is better when brand loyalty is strong.
