Summary: VTE, consisting of DVT and PE, is a major cause of cardiovascular disease. Current diagnosis and treatment guidance for VTE are limited, and there is a lack of understanding of the mechanisms and pathways responsible for the occurrence of observed alterations. The application of metabolomics profiling may play a significant role in early diagnosis and management, but more research is needed to fully understand VTE-related metabolic changes.

Summary: This study identified sustained systemic inflammation as a key driver of VTE risk after major trauma. Specific inflammatory mediators such as IL-6, IL-8, and MCP-1 were found to be independent predictors of accelerated VTE development. Significant correlations were observed between inflammation and markers of coagulation and endothelial activation.

Summary: This study compared the clinical outcomes of open versus laparoscopic parastomal hernia repair and found that laparoscopic repair was associated with shorter operative duration, decreased length of stay, fewer short-term wound complications, and increased longevity of repair. Additional research is needed to further investigate methods associated with fewer complications and increased durability in parastomal hernia repair.

Summary: Ovarian cancer patients with venous thromboembolism (VTE) have molecular differences compared to those without. VTE is associated with upregulated inflammatory and coagulation pathways, and correlated with the expression of platelet-derived growth factor subunit B (PDGFB) and extracellular proteins, namely collagens.

Summary: The incidence of postoperative VTE is high in patients after incisional hernia repair, with distal DVT being the predominant event. Component separation, duration of operation, and body mass index are statistically significant risk factors for VTE in patients undergoing surgery for incisional hernia.

Summary: By comparing patients with and without mesh fixation during laparoscopic repair, it was found that the group without mesh fixation had superior outcomes in terms of postoperative pain, length of hospital stay, and return to social life, with no significant differences in complications and recurrence.

Summary: This study evaluated the rates of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in trauma patients with COVID-19 and found no significant difference in VTE rates between COVID-19-positive and -negative patients, as well as no difference in the type of VTE observed. However, COVID-19-positive patients had increased ICU and hospital length of stay, as well as higher mortality, likely due to multifactorial causes but primarily related to their underlying COVID-19 infection.

Summary: This study aims to compare the postoperative outcomes of laparoscopic vs. open repair of inguinal hernias in patients on antiplatelet and anticoagulant therapy. The results suggest that laparoscopic repair appears to be safe in patients receiving these therapies under current perioperative management patterns.

Summary: This study is a large-scale, multicenter, prospective registry that aims to investigate the incidence and risk factors of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in adult Japanese patients with solid tumors. The analysis of stomach cancer patients revealed that female sex, age >= 65 years, VTE history, and D-dimer > 1.2 μg/mL were independent risk factors for VTE. Additionally, screening for D-dimer before starting cancer treatment is necessary, even for asymptomatic patients.

Summary: This study investigated the rates and factors associated with laparoscopic and open inguinal hernia repairs in a large hernia center in China. The results showed that approximately 50% of patients underwent laparoscopic repairs, which were more commonly performed in male, young, bilateral hernias, and inpatients without comorbidities. The utilization of laparoscopic repairs among female patients with inguinal hernias needs to be improved.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the occurrence and risk factors of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in post-radical prostatectomy patients. It was found that the overall incidence of VTE in post-RP patients is 1%, and minimally invasive procedures and RP without pelvic lymph node dissection are associated with a lower risk of developing VTE. Additional pharmacological prophylaxis may not be necessary in all cases and should be considered in high-risk patients only.

Summary: According to the study, plasma levels of Hsp90 are increased in patients with systemic sclerosis compared to healthy controls, and are associated with increased inflammatory activity, worsened lung function, and extent of skin involvement in patients with diffuse cutaneous systemic sclerosis. In patients with systemic sclerosis-associated interstitial lung disease treated with cyclophosphamide, baseline Hsp90 levels can predict changes in DLCO over 12 months of therapy.

Summary: This research found that PD-1 and PD-L1 expression in salivary gland cancer patients primarily cluster in the tumor periphery, potentially predicting the response to immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy. Additionally, PD-1 positive tumor cells were mainly found in the center of high-grade tumors, and the presence of lymph node metastases and primary tumor stage significantly correlated with PD-L1 positive tumor cells in the tumor periphery.

Summary: Salivary gland carcinomas (SGCs) exhibit high morphological heterogeneity and limited treatment options. Immunotherapy with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) is a promising approach for SGCs, but their resistance to this therapy may be modulated by the Fas-FasL interplay. The study found that SGC cells exhibit resistance to FasL-induced apoptosis by tumor-infiltrating immune cells, potentially impacting immunotherapy outcomes in high-stage tumors.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of heparin by monitoring changes in thrombin generation in vitro, so that pregnant women are not exposed to stress in vivo. The results showed significant differences in the degree of inhibition among different heparins, with nadroparin being the most effective. Therefore, monitoring thrombin generation should be supplemented with routine anti-Xa activity monitoring to estimate thrombophilic risk during pregnancy.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of Oncostatin M (OSM) on immune cells derived from liposarcoma, leiomyosarcoma, and myxofibrosarcoma, and the potential cooperation between OSM and nivolumab in treating these soft tissue sarcomas (STSs). The results suggest that OSM may have a role in the treatment of leiomyosarcoma, myxofibrosarcoma, and liposarcoma. However, further histotype-tailored studies are needed to fully comprehend the functions of OSM in STSs.
