There is still limited knowledge about the prevalence and risk factors of nasal carriage for Staphylococcus aureus among healthy carriers in China. We investigated 2448 healthy adults (>= 18 years of age) from Beijing (n = 1530) and Harbin (n = 918) by nasal screening. Participants were checked for carriage of S. aureus, and health-related and demographic information between 2009 and 2011 was gathered. A total of 403 S. aureus (403/2448, 16.5%) were recovered, 8 of which were methicillin resistant (8/2448, 0.33%). Three factors were independently associated with S. aureus nasal carriage: Harbin as city of residence (odds ratio (OR) = 2.0, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.41 to 2.85), age <= 24 years (OR = 1.77, 95% Cl = 1.30-2.44) and non-Han ethnicity (OR = 1.58, 95% Cl = 1.05 to 2.38). On the basis of population genetic analysis using multiple locus variable number of tandem repeats analysis (MLVA) and spa typing, MLVA complex (MC) 398 and MC5a were the most prevalent clonal lineages in this collection. In multivariate models, residing in Harbin (OR = 1.77, 95% Cl = 1.07-2.92) and having household members in the healthcare profession (OR = 3.69, 95% CI = 1.14-11.92) were factors associated with carriage of clonal lineage MC398. On the other hand, female sex (OR = 3.15, 95% CI = 1.35-7.33) and a history of chronic liver disease (OR = 16.93, 95% Cl = 2.91-98.59) were associated with the clonal lineage MC5a. The three most common spa types were t571 (10.9%), t189 (9.9%) and t701 (7.2%). These findings provide insight into the determinants of nasal carriage and ecology for some of the most successful strains of S. aureus among healthy people in Northern China. A single-polarization hollow-core anti-resonant fiber based on epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) material in terahertz region

Summary: A single-polarization hollow core anti-resonant fiber (HC-ARF) in the terahertz (THz) region is proposed, with excellent single-polarization behavior achieved through material parameter optimization. The introduction of epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) material into high resistance silicon tubes further improves the single polarization behavior, enlarging the polarization extinction ratio (PER) and greatly improving birefringence. Configuration parameter optimization is conducted to obtain high PER and birefringence at 1 THz. The proposed single-polarization HC-ARF has great potential applications in polarization sensitive communication and THz band sensors.

Lycium Barbarum polysaccharides ameliorates hyperglycemia-exacerbated cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury via protecting blood-brain barrier

Qi Zhao, Yu-Meng Jing, Mao-Tao He, Li Jing, Yan-Feng Xi, Jian-Zhong Zhang

Summary: Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBP) can ameliorate cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury exacerbated by hyperglycemia by protecting the blood-brain barrier. The study found that LBP pretreatment reversed the increase in neurological deficit, infarct volume, cell apoptosis, and IgG leakage associated with hyperglycemia. Furthermore, LBP therapy also reversed the detrimental effects on endothelium, astrocytes, tight junctions, and basement membrane integrity caused by hyperglycemia.

Panoramic Digital Image Correlation for 360-Deg Full-Field Displacement Measurement

Yiran Li, Dong Zhao, Xueyi Ma, Jianzhong Zhang, Jian Zhao

Summary: This paper proposes a panoramic displacement field measurement method to accurately measure the shape and panoramic displacement field of objects with complex morphologies. The method is based on the robust subset-based DIC algorithm and Zhang's calibration method, and it reconstructs the 3D shape and estimates the full-field displacements of complex surfaces from multi-view stereo camera pairs. The proposed method also determines the scale factor of the 3D reconstructed surface and stitches multiple 3D reconstructed surfaces using laser point cloud data. The experimental results confirm the accuracy of the proposed method in measuring panoramic shape and full-field displacement of complex objects.

Summary: This study presents the population structure of 551 global C. albicans strains, with 370 strains' antifungal susceptibilities tested. The results show that 66.6% of the azole-nonsusceptible/non-wild-type strains belong to Clade 1. Within Clade 1, two nested subclades (Clade 1-R and Clade 1-R-alpha) exhibit higher azole resistance and are distributed in different cities in China. This study highlights the importance of monitoring the spread of these drug-resistant subclades for public health.

Spider Silk as a Flexible Light Waveguide for Temperature Sensing

Min Zhang, Zhihai Liu, Yu Zhang, Yaxun Zhang, Jianzhong Zhang, Xinghua Yang, Libo Yuan

Summary: This study proposes a method to use natural spider dragline silk (SDS) as a flexible light waveguide integrated into an optic device. By coupling the light propagating in a microfiber into the SDS, and then coupling it to another microfiber connected to a spectrometer, the output multimode interference spectrum can be changed based on the difference in the effective refractive index of the modes in the silk fiber. The presented interferometer proves that SDS is a natural independent light guide suitable for integrated optic devices.

Summary: ST7 Staphylococcus aureus, which is highly prevalent in humans, pigs, and food in China, has rarely been reported to cause staphylococcal food poisoning (SFP). However, a recent outbreak of SFP caused by ST7 S. aureus strains occurred in two kindergartens in Hainan Province, China. Whole-genome sequencing analysis revealed the genetic characteristics and phylogenetic relationships of these SFP strains and provided insights into the potential risk of this emergent ST7 clone for SFP.

RdxA Diversity and Mutations Associated with Metronidazole Resistance of Helicobacter pylori

Yanan Gong, Kangle Zhai, Lu Sun, Lihua He, Hairui Wang, Yahui Guo, Jianzhong Zhang

Summary: Increased resistance to metronidazole impairs the efficacy of H. pylori eradication, and increasing the dose of metronidazole may not overcome this resistance in highly resistant strains and may lead to more adverse effects. The study found that truncated mutations in the rdxA gene can effectively identify patients with high-level metronidazole resistance, allowing for personalized treatment and avoiding unnecessary increases in metronidazole dosage.

Isolation and Genomic Characteristics of Cat-Borne Campylobacter felis sp. nov. and Sheep-Borne Campylobacter ovis sp. nov

Summary: Nine novel bacterial strains were isolated from the feces of cats and sheep in Beijing, China in 2019 and 2020. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences identified two new species within the genus Campylobacter, distinct from currently recognized species. The proposed names for these new species are Campylobacter felis (Type strain XJK22-1(T) = GDMCC 1.3684(T) = JCM 35847(T)) and Campylobacter ovis (Type strain SYS25-1(T) = GDMCC 1.3685(T)).

Perinevoid Alopecia: Report of Two Cases and Literature Review

Yujing Zhang, Jianzhong Zhang, Cheng Zhou

Summary: Perinevoid alopecia (PA) is a rare type of alopecia areata (AA) that is associated with a pigmented nevus in the center. Two cases of PA were reported in this study, and a review of 14 cases from 11 previous studies was conducted. In one of the cases, PA was found to be combined with a halo nevus, and white terminal hairs were spared in the area of hair loss, which is rarely reported in the literature. It is suggested that antigens from melanocytes may be involved in the development of AA in PA.
