Summary: Artemisia annua, a traditional Chinese medicine, has been long used for its antimalarial efficacy. This study isolated and identified 18 sesquiterpenes from A. annua and found that three of them exhibited cytotoxicity. Compound 5 showed significant inhibition of cell proliferation and induction of apoptosis in CT26 and HCT116 cells.

Summary: The ethanol extract and ethyl acetate fraction of Artemisia dubia exhibited cytotoxic activity against HepG2 cells. The bio-guided isolation of active compounds led to the discovery of 20 previously undescribed guaiane-type sesquiterpenoid dimers. These compounds showed obvious cytotoxicity against hepatoma cell lines, particularly artemidubolides B, D, and M. Mechanism investigations revealed the potential of artemidubolide D in inhibiting cell migration and invasion, inducing cell cycle arrest, and promoting apoptosis.
