Assessing the manner in which research is conducted is a key mechanism for leveraging a transformation in sustainability. Scientific answers to current sustainability threats are reliant on research design, conduct and dissemination. Thus, the research process itself merits a full consideration of its responsibility toward societal goals and values. Although the responsibility of research to society has recently been raised in scientific discourse, a systematic framework to guide such considerations that can be applied in a self-reflective manner across disciplines is lacking. Informed by a literature review that revealed an emerging discussion, this paper suggests an assessment framework for socially responsible research processes that integrates eight criteria: (1) approach to complexity and uncertainty, (2) ethics, (3) interdisciplinarity, (4) integrative approach, (5) reflection on impacts, (6) transdisciplinarity, (7) transparency and (8) user orientation. These criteria, including their respective linkages and ambivalent meanings, are elucidated. Implementation challenges, application trade-offs and opportunities with respect to an enhanced shift toward societal responsibility in research processes are discussed.

Towards a standardization of soil-related ecosystem service assessments

Summary: The concept of ecosystem services (ES) emphasizes the value of ecosystems for human well-being, and the Common International Classification of Ecosystem Services (CICES) is a significant step forward, although there are challenges in applying it to soils. The study identified 29 soil-related ES and 40 ES affected by agricultural soil management, highlighting the need for better collaboration between soil research and ES communities to address constraints in the CICES classification.

Analysis of the development and structural drivers of raw-material use in Germany

Matthias Pfaff, Rainer Walz

Summary: In this study, a multi-regional environmentally extended input-output analysis of Germany's raw-material use was conducted, revealing slight upward trends in input-based indicators and relatively steady consumption-based indicators. The analysis also showed that exports were a significant driver of the increase in input-based indicators for Germany.

Human Health and Soil Health Risks from Heavy Metals, Micro(nano)plastics, and Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria in Agricultural Soils

Stanislava Perkovic, Carsten Paul, Filip Vasic, Katharina Helming

Summary: This paper investigates the linkages between soil contamination and human health risk by reviewing the state of knowledge on heavy metals, micro(nano)plastics, and antibiotic-resistant bacteria in agricultural soils. Results show that antibiotic-resistant bacteria and micro(nano)plastics pose potential threats to human health, while knowledge of the effects of heavy metals on human health is well established. However, there are still significant knowledge gaps and inadequate monitoring systems.

Valorization for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services in the Agri-Food Value Chain

Summary: This article defines valorization of biodiversity and ecosystem services (BES) measures and presents examples of private valorization in the agri-food value chain. Valorization incentivizes measures to promote BES, while valuation quantifies BES. The article also highlights the lack of research on private options compared to public policy options. Through research, four clusters of private valorization options were identified, and their viability was assessed from legal and systems dynamics perspective in different future scenarios.

Summary: The lack of strong interconnection between research, policy, and societal action inhibits climate change mitigation in agri-food systems. Modelling tools, international superordinate bodies, and stakeholder-inclusive assessment frameworks can facilitate better alignment between these three pillars of human progress.
