Morphological variation in three rarely collected European species of the genus Lasiochernes Beier, 1932 is thoroughly examined in the present study. Detailed descriptions of previously ignored morphological characters of L. cretonatus Henderickx, 1998, L. jonicus (Beier, 1929) and L. pilosus (Ellingsen, 1910) are presented. The female of L. cretonatus and the nymphs of L. pilosus are described for the first time. Multivariate morphometric techniques (principal coordinate analysis and discriminant analyses) were employed to confirm morphological differentiation of the three Lasiochernes species and to identify the most reliable characters for their separation. The usefulness of particular body parts for species identification was evaluated. An identification key for the females of the Lasiochernes species studied is provided. Geographic distribution and habitat preferences of the three species are summarized.

Multiple Drivers of High Species Diversity and Endemism Among Alyssum Annuals in the Mediterranean: The Evolutionary Significance of the Aegean Hotspot

Veronika Cetlova, Judita Zozomova-Lihova, Andrea Melicharkova, Lenka Martonfiova, Stanislav Spaniel

Summary: The Mediterranean Basin is a significant hotspot of species diversity, with the Alyssum annual plants showing high species diversity and varied distribution patterns in the region. The evolution of these plants could be traced back to the Late Miocene/Pliocene, with most extant species originating during the Pleistocene. Multiple polyploidization events have contributed significantly to species diversity in the Mediterranean.

Plant phylogeography of the Balkan Peninsula: spatiotemporal patterns and processes

Stanislav Spaniel, Ivana Resetnik

Summary: The Balkan Peninsula is recognized as an important center of biodiversity and a refuge for plant species. This paper reviews the current knowledge on plant phylogeography in the region, exploring patterns of genetic diversity and the role of refugia. The study highlights the importance of Pleistocene climatic fluctuations and identifies evolutionary mechanisms such as speciation, polyploidy, and hybridization shaping species diversity in the Balkans.

Temporal stability of spatial cytotype structure in mixed-ploidy populations of Centaurea stoebe

Patrik Mraz, Stanislav Spaniel, Katarina Skokanova, Barbora Singliarova

Summary: The study on the temporal stability of spatial structure of monocarpic diploids and polycarpic tetraploids revealed that despite higher colonization ability, tetraploids remained confined to their former microsites and showed no spatial expansion. Spatial patterns of coexisting diploids and tetraploids did not change over more than a decade, likely due to stable habitat conditions and limited seed dispersal, contributing to the long-term coexistence of cytotypes.

Out of the Balkans and Anatolia to the Western Alps? Surprising phylogenetic implications for two endemic Alyssum (Brassicaceae) species: A. cognense sp. nov. and A. rossetii

Summary: The European Alps have a high degree of endemism due to glacial refugia and environmental heterogeneity. This study focused on Alyssum populations in the Western Alps, specifically in the Aosta Valley region. They found a new species, Alyssum cognense, which is distinct from A. montanum and has its closest relative in the Balkans. Another species, A. rossetii, is phylogenetically distant and belongs to the mainly Asian Alyssum lineage. This study emphasizes the importance of taxonomic and phylogenetic studies in understanding the complex evolution of endemics.

Fallopia xmoravica (Polygonaceae), a new hybrid between Fallopia compacta and F. sachalinensis

Iva Hodalova, Lenka Martonfiova, Katarina Skokanova, Stanislav Spaniel, Pavol Mereda

Summary: This article describes a new hybrid knotweed species, F xmoravica, originating from the Moravia region in the Czech Republic. F xmoravica differs from the related hybrid F. xbohemica by having a tetraploid chromosome number and the absence of purple spots on stem internodes, as well as by its unique relative genome size compared to other European Fallopia species.

Integrative Taxonomy Approach Reveals Cryptic Diversity within the Phoretic Pseudoscorpion Genus Lamprochernes (Pseudoscorpiones: Chernetidae)

Jana Christophoryova, Katarina Krajcovicova, Frantisek Stahlavsky, Stanislav Spaniel, Vera Opatova

Summary: Pseudoscorpions are a widespread, but often overlooked group of animals with small body size and homogeneous appearance. In this study, an integrative approach combining molecular, cytogenetic, and morphological analyses was implemented to assess species boundaries in European Lamprochernes populations. The results revealed the existence of a new Lamprochernes species, Lamprochernes abditus sp. nov., which can only be distinguished from its closest relative by molecular and cytogenetic differences or a complex multivariate morphometric analysis involving other Lamprochernes species. The study also suggests that phoresy is an efficient mode of dispersal in the genus Lamprochernes.

Phylogenetic challenges in a recently diversified and polyploid-rich Alyssum (Brassicaceae) lineage: low divergence, reticulation, and parallel polyploid speciation

Stanislav Spaniel, Marek Slenker, Andrea Melicharkova, Michaela Cabonova, Michaela Sandalova, Vojtech Zeisek, Karol Marhold, Judita Zozomova-Lihova

Summary: This study used high-throughput sequencing and target enrichment with genome skimming (Hyb-Seq) to investigate the evolutionary history of the Alyssum montanum-A. repens species complex. The results revealed rapid diversification and reticulation events among diploid species, as well as multiple polyploidization events involving closely related diploid progenitors. This study provides valuable insights into polyploid evolution.

Cytogeography of invasive knotweeds (Fallopia sect. Reynoutria) in central Europe: rare aneuploids and evidence for a climatically determined distribution

Pavol Mered'a, Lenka Martonfiova, Katarina Skokanova, Stanislav Spaniel, Iva Hodalova

Summary: In this study, the relative genome size of 1,159 individuals from 1,003 populations of knotweeds in the Western Carpathians and adjacent area was determined using flow cytometry. The results showed that the hexaploid cytotype of F. xbohemica and octoploid cytotype of F. japonica var. japonica were the most common in the area. Additionally, aneuploid knotweed plants with abnormal chromosome numbers were recorded for the first time. The study also revealed a climatically determined distribution of invasive knotweeds in the area.
