Summary: This study investigated the outcomes of vascularized lymph node transfer (VLNT) in elderly patients with secondary upper extremity lymphedema. The results showed that VLNT significantly improved the limb circumferential difference and reduced the frequency of cellulitis in elderly patients with secondary upper extremity lymphedema. It also improved the quality of life without the use of compression garments postoperatively.

Summary: The study aimed to identify relevant psychosocial predictors for success or failure of upper-extremity vascularized composite allotransplantation (UE VCA) in an Austrian cohort. The results showed that psychosocial factors are important in the assessment and follow-up care for UE VCA. Protocols must be individualized, patient-centered, and interdisciplinary in order to capture the psychosocial elements effectively. Investigating psychosocial predictors and collecting outcomes is critical in justifying UE VCA as a medical intervention and providing accurate information to prospective candidates.

Summary: The study used qualitative methods to interview 11 participants who had traumatic upper extremity amputations within 3 years of their accident, and found that the value of the hand and the value of working were central phenomena in the adjustment process. Through the themes of instability of the core identity and efforts to stabilize the self, the study described how the process either interfered with or promoted the formation of new values, leading to adjustment.

Summary: This study used a longitudinal, co-twin control design and found that recreational cannabis legalization was associated with increased cannabis use and decreased alcohol use disorder symptoms. However, it was not associated with other adverse outcomes. The study also found that vulnerability to cannabis use was not exacerbated by the legal cannabis environment.

Summary: This study compared the management and outcomes of upper and lower extremity traumatic vascular injuries and found that upper extremity injuries were more common in females, associated with nerve injuries, bleeding, and pre-hospital tourniquet use, with a higher likelihood of vessel ligation or primary reanastomosis during surgery. Postoperatively, upper extremity injuries were associated with persistent nerve deficits, while lower extremity injuries had a higher incidence of 30-day limb loss.

Summary: The study aimed to assess the validity of a customized nine-item Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System Upper Extremity instrument in individuals with upper extremity amputation. Results showed satisfactory psychometric properties, supporting its use within this population. Structual validity, known-groups analysis, and reliability tests all indicated high validity and reliability of the instrument.

Summary: The use of pyrocarbon implants in upper extremity arthroplasty has led to a breadth of literature evaluating long-term outcomes and complications. Complication and reoperation rates in the hand and wrist were 28.2% and 17% respectively, with the highest complication rate seen in the proximal interphalangeal joint. Major complications included dislocations, stiffness, deformity, and hardware failure in the hand and wrist.

Summary: Upper extremity deep vein thrombosis (UE-DVT) is a common and increasing complication in hospitalized patients, with most affected patients being middle-aged, overweight, white men. While the majority of patients receive anticoagulation therapy in the hospital, only half continue this treatment upon discharge. Common complications upon discharge include major bleeding and recurrent UE-DVT.
