Variations in burden have been observed across different countries and sexes.

Global occurrence, drivers, and environmental risks of microplastics in marine environments

Summary: With increasing plastic waste pollution in the oceans, this study conducted a meta-analysis on marine microplastic (MP) pollution based on 165 articles. The findings revealed significant spatial heterogeneity in global marine MP abundance, influenced by offshore distance, population density, and economic development. The study also identified the dominant sources of marine MPs as land-based waste and marine operations, with distribution primarily found in nearshore submarine areas, the water column, and deep-sea bottom environment.

Summary: Cancer is the leading cause of death among children. The global burden of childhood cancer has significantly decreased over the past 30 years, but remains higher in countries with lower social development index (SDI). Leukemia is the most common type of childhood cancer and the leading cause of death. International collaboration should be strengthened to improve healthcare for children with cancer in low SDI countries.

The global burden of peripheral artery disease

Public health efforts and vascular surgical resources are needed to address this increasing health threat.

Global burden analysis and AutoGluon prediction of accidental carbon monoxide poisoning by Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

This unseen burden of disease, consisting of conditions that are not presented to local physicians or missed in data extrapolation, is explored in opinions from physicians in different income countries to understand contributing factors and utilize it effectively.

Summary: This study provides global, regional, and national estimates of the burden of chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs) from 1990 to 2019. The results show that although the age-standardised prevalence, death, and DALY rates of CRDs have decreased, they still cause a substantial burden and deaths worldwide. The highest death and DALY rates are found in low and low-middle SDI countries, emphasizing the urgent need for improved preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic measures.

Global, Regional, and National Burden of Ischemic Stroke, 1990-2019

Summary: Based on the data, there are differences in the burden of ischemic stroke globally and regionally among different sexes, age groups, and social development indexes. The incidence rate, mortality, and disability-adjusted life-years of ischemic stroke increase with age, while the age-standardized death rate and age-standardized DALY rates increase most significantly in some regions.
