An imidazolium based Bronsted Lewis acidic ionic liquid has been shown to be an excellent catalyst and reaction medium for the tetrahydropyranylation of various alcohols in good to excellent yields with short reaction times. Selective protection of benzyl alcohol in the presence of phenol was achieved. The novel ionic liquid was prepared from readily available starting materials and could be easily recovered and reused several times without significant deterioration in catalytic activity.
