Summary: To remain competitive and concentrate on their core competencies, many Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) opt to outsource manufacturing and/or component procurement functions to Contract Manufacturers (CMs). This paper investigates the strategic dynamics between manufacturing outsourcing and procurement outsourcing in a three-tier supply chain including a component supplier, a common CM, and two rival OEMs. The research highlights the interdependency between these two types of outsourcing and identifies the conditions under which OEMs choose different outsourcing strategies.

Summary: This study aims to examine the impact of inventions, measured by the number of new patents, on economic growth. The results indicate that total patents have mutually causal effects with economic growth, while ICT patents have a unidirectional causal impact on economic growth. The impact of total patents on economic growth is stronger in advanced economies, and ICT patents have a positive significant impact on the growth of advanced economies and a negative significant effect on the growth of emerging economies. In the long-run, ICT patents have a positive significant impact on economic growth, while total patents do not.

Summary: This paper explores the impact of the two-way integration of manufacturing and service industries on enterprise value. By studying 12 manufacturing sectors in 29 provinces of China and Chinese A-share manufacturing listed companies, the authors find that this integration increases the value of manufacturing enterprises, particularly in non-state-owned, equity-concentrated, or technology-intensive industries. The integration achieves this by increasing corporate risk-taking. The findings provide valuable recommendations for managers and government agencies to promote high-quality development of the manufacturing industry.

Summary: Companies invest in efficient production systems to lower costs and remain competitive, while environmental sustainability efforts are often driven by government regulations. However, many companies focus on minimizing environmental impacts in the early stages of product life cycle, neglecting sustainability management post-use. This study developed sustainability indicators for the electronics industry to assess environmental practices related to product recovery after use, revealing how companies are working to reduce environmental impacts at the end of product life cycle.

Summary: This article examines how frontline workers in the Norwegian Labor and Welfare Administration (NAV) perceive electronic communication with clients in terms of its efficiency. The empirical data consist of interviews with NAV frontline workers, who argue both for and against the efficiency of electronic communication. The availability of services through electronic communication can potentially spur a demand for services, indicating a resource trade-off between efficient services and available services.

Summary: This study examines the connection between trademark registration and firm growth in different stages of development and industry sectors in Korea. Two paths of firm growth are identified: trademark-dominant and patent-dominant. Trademarks are found to be beneficial for early-stage firm growth, followed by technological innovations and filing for more patents. Utility models, on the other hand, are useful for early-stage growth in sectors with significant technological advancements. The findings suggest that different types of intellectual property rights manifest differently for firms at different stages of development and highlight the importance of considering various IPRs in innovation policy.
