Summary: Chronic pancreatitis is a debilitating inflammatory disease of the pancreas that causes severe pain and poor quality of life. While traditional management includes medication and lifestyle modifications, recent studies suggest that early surgical intervention may be more beneficial in mitigating disease progression. However, the technical difficulties associated with severe inflammation have hindered the widespread adoption of minimally invasive surgery for chronic pancreatitis. Nonetheless, recent advancements in laparoscopic instrumentation have resulted in increased use of minimally invasive procedures for this condition.

Summary: Surgery for Crohn's disease has made significant advancements, especially in the field of minimally invasive surgery. This approach offers numerous advantages, such as shorter hospitalization duration, improved cosmetic outcomes, and reduced occurrence of intra-abdominal adhesions. However, the complex characteristics of Crohn's disease pose challenges to the complete implementation of minimally invasive surgery, and further research is needed to explore its applicability.

Summary: This study compared patients undergoing mitral valve repair by open sternotomy and minimally invasive surgery, and found that the minimally invasive surgery group had reduced opioid use but slightly higher pain scores postoperatively. Possible explanations include differences in incision site pain and subjective differences in postoperative pain expectations.

Summary: This study investigated the incidence of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients undergoing large specimen hysterectomy for benign indications and evaluated the impact of route of surgery and operative time on VTE development. The study found that VTE occurrence after large specimen hysterectomy for benign indications is rare. Longer operative times were associated with increased odds of VTE, while minimally invasive approaches were associated with lower odds of VTE.

Summary: This study analyzed initial and follow-up measured hemoglobin values for children with BLSI with and without evidence of intra-abdominal bleeding. The results showed that decreases in hemoglobin are expected after trauma, even if not bleeding. Initial hemoglobin levels correlate with failure of non-operative management and transfusion, but subsequent hemoglobin levels do not guide the need for transfusion or correlate with failure of non-operative management.
