Summary: The study found an association between higher neighborhood disadvantage and higher stroke risk in Sweden and Japan, but not in the United States. The relationship between neighborhood socioeconomic status (nSES) and stroke risk within different racial groups in the United States was inconclusive. Additional research is needed to investigate potential intermediate and modifiable factors of the association between nSES and stroke incidence, which could serve as intervention points.

Summary: Robust data on osteoporosis in the Asia Pacific region can improve healthcare decision-making. Osteoporosis affects 10-30% of women aged 40 + and up to 10% of men in 7 developed economies in the Asia Pacific. Fractures affect 500-1000 adults aged 50 + per 100,000 person-years. Policymakers and clinicians must address this problem.

Summary: Through cadaveric and clinical studies, it was found that the superior trabecular structure of lumbar vertebral bodies is more prone to causing osteoporotic vertebral fractures compared to the inferior trabecular structure. Physicians should focus on the bone mineral density values of the superior region when evaluating osteoporosis.

Summary: In this international study, the researchers analyzed the incidence of hip fractures, post-fracture treatment, and all-cause mortality following hip fractures across different countries and regions. They used patient-level healthcare data from 19 countries and identified 4,115,046 hip fractures from 2005 to 2018. The study revealed variations in the global epidemiology of hip fractures and post-fracture outcomes, highlighting the need for interventions to reduce the burden of osteoporotic fractures.

Summary: The aim of this study was to estimate the incidence of clinical fragility fractures in postmenopausal women with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and analyze the risk factors for fracture. The study found that the incidence of clinical fragility fractures in RA patients was higher compared to the control population. Risk factors for fractures in RA patients included age, previous fracture, parental hip fracture, years since menopause, bone mineral density, erosions, disease activity and disability, and cumulative dose of glucocorticoids. This highlights the higher risk of fractures in RA patients and the importance of addressing the associated risk factors.

Summary: Based on the data analysis of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019, the incidence and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) of vertebral fracture have been increasing globally over the past thirty years, while the incidence rate and DALY rate have been decreasing. High-income countries and regions generally have higher incidence and DALY rates. Males have higher incidence and DALY rates than females in all age groups globally, but after the age of 65, females surpass males in both incidence and DALY rates. Falls are the leading cause of vertebral fracture across all age groups.

Summary: The study found that the proportion of hip fractures in people over 60 in Tangshan increased significantly during the observation period, especially in women. There were significant increasing trends in the incidence of cervical and trochanteric fractures in different genders and age groups. Hip fracture incidence also increased significantly in the 36-60 age group.

Summary: This study explored the prevalence of osteoporosis in Chinese patients over 50 years old undergoing spine surgery, finding a high prevalence especially in those with degenerative scoliosis as their primary diagnosis. It suggests that bone mineral density and X-ray evaluations should be included in the clinical routine for these patients before surgery.

Summary: This study used an umbrella review and meta-analysis to summarize the association between dietary factors and the incidence of osteoporosis in adults. The findings suggest that dietary factors have an impact on osteoporosis, and consuming appropriate amounts of dairy products, vegetables, fruits, and micronutrients, while reducing alcohol and coffee intake, can help reduce the risk of osteoporosis.

Summary: In a simulated population of older women, shifting the entire BMD distribution upwards by approximately 0.3SD may decrease the risk of incident fractures significantly. Two strategies were compared: targeting high-risk individuals based on T-score and uplifting the entire population's BMD distribution. Both strategies reduced expected incident fractures, with age and fracture site impacting their effectiveness differently.

Summary: This retrospective cohort study investigated the effect of graft position on subsidence after anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF). The study found that placing the graft in the anterior position of the surgical-level endplate reduces the risk of subsidence. Smaller graft footprint size and pseudarthrosis were also found to be associated with subsidence.

Summary: This study investigated the incidence of mechanical complications following multilevel posterior cervical instrumented fusion surgery. The significant risk factors for mechanical complications were low bone mineral density, a large number of fused vertebrae, a large preoperative C2-7 sagittal vertical axis, and low preoperative C2-7 lordosis. The findings of this study could be valuable for preoperative counseling and surgical planning.

Summary: The study compared the sagittal alignment differences between the biplanar whole body imaging system (EOS) and conventional whole spine X-ray (WSX). In sagittally imbalanced patients, EOS showed smaller pelvic tilt (PT), greater sacral slope (SS), and more upright posture compared to WSX. However, in sagittally balanced patients, these differences were less pronounced. Surgeons should take these differences into account when planning surgical interventions.
