Extracorporeal CPR for Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest

Summary: In the study by Suverein et al., the use of extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in patients with refractory out-of-hospital cardiac arrest was examined. The results showed similar survival rates with a favorable neurologic outcome between extracorporeal CPR and conventional CPR. This raises questions about the role of extracorporeal CPR as an adjunct to conventional CPR.

Thin foil body-shield resuscitation barrier device to protect from blood: an experimental study

Summary: This experimental study investigates the characteristics of blood drops dispersed on four different foil surfaces and finds differences in the characteristics compared to paper towel. Delayed clotting is associated with larger areas of contamination, indicating a higher likelihood of coming into contact with potential germs but a lower chance of contracting an infection. Space blankets, as obligatory components of first aid kits, serve as a mechanical barrier between rescuers and patients during resuscitation.

Comparison of hemodynamic effects of chest compression delivered via machine or human in asphyxiated piglets

Summary: Machine chest compression leads to significant improvements in hemodynamic parameters during resuscitation of asphyxiated neonatal piglets, including greater stroke volume and left ventricular contractility, compared to manual compression techniques. This suggests that mechanical chest compression devices may offer better outcomes in neonatal and pediatric asphyxia-induced cardiac arrest.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of cardiac arrest (CA), conventional cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR) on the serum proteome profiles in a pig model. The results showed significant changes in the serum proteome during resuscitation, including haemolysis, coagulation, inflammation, and cell-death processes. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms and may help improve therapeutic options for CA and resuscitation.

Faculty Development Approaches for Life Support Courses: A Scoping Review

Summary: This scoping review identified faculty development approaches to improve instructional competence in accredited life support courses. The interventions included instructor qualification/training, assessment tools, teaching skills enhancement, and additional courses for instructors. These interventions were associated with improved learning outcomes, teaching ability, and self-confidence of the instructors. It is recommended that local organizations implement faculty development programs for their teaching staff of their accredited resuscitation courses. Further research should focus on strengthening and maintaining instructor competency, as well as evaluating the cost-effectiveness of different faculty development strategies.

Blended learning for accredited life support courses - A systematic review

Summary: This study evaluated the effectiveness of blended learning compared to non-blended learning approaches for accredited life support courses. The results showed that blended learning is at least as effective as non-blended learning for participant satisfaction, knowledge, skills, and attitudes. Despite high set up costs, blended learning has the potential for cost reduction and eventual net profit. However, the certainty of evidence was very low, and further research is needed.
