Contamination of medicinal plants with heavy metals as Pb and Cd can affect the growth and the essential oil production of the plants and represent a risk to those who consume as medicine. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of absorption and localization of Pb and Cd on growth, ultrastructural aspects of leaves and essential oil yield and composition of Mentha arvensis, applied on the soil with increasing concentrations (8, 16, 32, 64 and 128mg kg(-1)). There was a differential absorption of Pb and Cd by M. arvensis mainly concentrated in the roots. Pb was found in small amounts in the leaves while Cd largely exceeded the safety limit without symptoms of toxicity. The ultrastructural analysis revealed the metal accumulation on vesicles surrounding the mitochondria and the presence of electron dense deposits surrounding the mitochondria, nucleus and chloroplasts. Little changes caused by Pb and Cd application were not enough to affect the growth and essential oil yield and composition of M. arvensis.

Comparison between water quality indices in watersheds of the Southern Bahia (Brazil) with different land use

Olandia Ferreira Lopes, Raildo Mota de Jesus, Lucas Farias de Sousa, Felizardo Adenilson Rocha, Daniela Mariano Lopes da Silva, Andrique Figueiredo Amorim, Vinnicius Henrique Cerqueira da Silva, Julio Alejandro Navoni

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of land use and occupation on water quality indices in the Eastern Water Planning and Management Region in Bahia, Brazil. The research found that urban and agricultural/pasture areas significantly influenced water quality variables, leading to lower WQI values in the Cachoeira watershed. The study also concluded that the NSF, CETESB, and Bascaron WQI methods were the most similar in evaluating the water quality of watersheds in the study area.

Summary: The study evaluated the Soil and Water Assessment Tool for modeling the flow behavior of the Cachoeira River Basin between 1985 and 2005 using manual calibration process under two alternative scenarios. Results showed that the land use changes after the cacao crisis in the late 1980s did not significantly affect the water services in the Cachoeira River Basin.

Summary: This study proposed a new method using hexamethyldisilazane as a silanizing agent for the determination of phenolic compounds in wines. The developed analytical method by gas chromatography showed accurate quantification of gallic acid, caffeic acid, resveratrol, (-) - epicatechin and (+) -catechin in wine samples. The validated method demonstrated low limits of quantification, high accuracy, and reduced derivatization time for the analysis of phenolic compounds in wine samples.

Summary: The study evaluated the determination of macro-and microelements in chocolate bars using microwave-induced plasma optical emission spectrometry (MIP OES) after microwave-assisted sample digestion. The optimized sample digestion conditions were successfully applied for routine analysis of chocolate bars, showing a wide range of element concentrations. The combination of microwave-assisted acid digestion with MIP OES technique proved to be effective for multi-element determination in chocolate bars.

History, dissemination, and field control strategies of cocoa witches' broom

Helio R. Sousa Filho, Raildo M. de Jesus, Marcos A. Bezerra, Gregorio M. Santana, Romario O. de Santana

Summary: The world demand for cocoa beans has increased, but the spread of witches' broom disease poses a significant obstacle to cocoa production. Various strategies such as genetic control, cultural management, and chemical and biological control have been attempted in the field to combat the disease, but economic and technical difficulties remain to be overcome. Although the disease is currently restricted to Central and South America, measures need to be taken to prevent its spread to other regions to avoid a global crisis in cocoa production.

Summary: A method was developed for simultaneous determination of multiple elements and caffeine, epicatechin in industrialized guarana-based beverages, with optimized acid digestion in a microwave oven. The detection limits were low, precision was high, and accuracy was confirmed. Additionally, PCA and HCA analysis revealed latent information.

Summary: A simple analytical procedure was developed for the direct analysis of guarana-based beverages to determine nutrient elements using ICP OES. Optimal conditions were determined by optimizing the RF power, sample volume, and nitric acid concentration, resulting in accurate quantification of Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn, K, Ca, S, P, and Mg. The method was successfully validated through analysis of standard reference material and addition-recovery experiments, demonstrating its reliability for analyzing soft and energy drinks containing guarana.
