Piper marginatum Jacq., Piperaceae, is a widely distributed Neotropical species abundant in the Caribbean, exhibiting a characteristic winged petiole and a heart-shaped leaf, its two vegetative landmarks for rapid identification. The species has been employed by traditional indigenous cultures for its reputed medicinal properties. The plant is most frequently employed by local healers in Central America, the Antilles and South America, for alleviating gastrointestinal ailments, administered as a decoction or infusion for its tonic, diuretic and carminative effects. These beneficial properties may be attributed to the presence of various phytochemicals within P. marginatum, with most of the studies focusing on the essential oil of the plant. Monoterpenoids, sesquiterpenoids and phenylpropanoids of a varied chemical structure have been identified in the essential oil, while phenylalkanoids, aristolactams, amides and flavonoids have been purified by chromatographic techniques from the extracts. The biological and pharmacological examination of P. marginatum showed that the plant may be a valuable source of mosquitocidal, antifungal, antitumoral and hemostatic agents. Future bioguided research may yield biologically relevant molecules useful in medicine or agriculture. (C) 2016 Sociedade Brasileira de Farmacognosia. Published by Elsevier Editora Ltda.

Entomobacter blattae gen. nov., sp. nov., a new member of the Acetobacteraceae isolated from the gut of the cockroach Gromphadorhina portentosa

Juan Guzman, Atena Sadat Sombolestani, Anja Poehlein, Rolf Daniel, Ilse Cleenwerck, Peter Vandamme, Andreas Vilcinskas

Summary: A novel bacterium G55GP(T) isolated from the gut of Madagascar hissing cockroach belongs to the Acetobacteraceae family, possibly representing a new genus. Phylogenetic analysis suggests that G55GP(T) forms a monophyletic clade with Commensalibacter, a genus also isolated exclusively from insects.

Genome analysis suggests the bacterial family Acetobacteraceae is a source of undiscovered specialized metabolites

Juan Guzman, Andreas Vilcinskas

Summary: Acetobacteraceae is an economically important family of bacteria, comprising acidophilic and acetous species with different biosynthetic gene clusters in their genomes. By constructing a phylogenomic tree and predicting gene clusters, specific biosynthetic pathways can be associated with taxonomic groups, indicating the potential of Acetobacteraceae as a source of undiscovered bacterial metabolites.

In vitro biological activity of extracts from marine bacteria cultures against Toxoplasma gondii and Mycobacterium tuberculosis

Marynes Quintero, Lina M. Blandon, Oscar M. Vidal, Juan D. Guzman, Jorge E. Gomez-Marin, Albert D. Patino, Diego A. Molina, Gloria M. Puerto-Castro, Javier Gomez-Leon

Summary: This study evaluated the biological activity of extracts from marine bacteria cultures against Toxoplasma gondii and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The Bacillus sp. INV FIR48 extract showed anti-T. gondii and anti-tuberculosis biological activity with low cytotoxicity, and peptide metabolites were detected in the extract. Marine bacteria are promising sources of natural products for anti-infective purposes, especially against prevalent diseases like toxoplasmosis and tuberculosis.

Draft Genome Sequence of Rhodococcus rhodochrous Strain G38GP, Isolated from the Madagascar Hissing Cockroach

Juan Guzman, Andreas Vilcinskas

Summary: The draft genome sequence of the bacterial species Rhodococcus rhodochrous strain G38GP, isolated from the gut of the cockroach Gromphadorhina portentosa, is reported in this study. The genome consists of 76 contigs, with a total length of 6,256,198 bp and a GC content of 67.82%. This information can be valuable for future research in biocatalysis and bioremediation.

Summary: A novel Gram-stain-positive bacterial species, designated Agromyces archimandritae sp. nov., was isolated from the hindgut of the cockroach Archimandrita tesselata. The genomic and phenotypic analysis revealed that G127AT(T) represents a previously undescribed species of the genus Agromyces.

Comment on Biodegradation of Polystyrene by Pseudomonas sp. Isolated from the Gut of Superworms (Larvae of Zophobas atratus)

Juan Guzman

Summary: The authors isolated a polystyrene-degrading bacterium from the gut of a superworm and identified it as Pseudomonas aeruginosa DSM 50071. However, claiming that the isolated strain is the same as the original DSM 50071 strain is misleading. Additional steps should be taken to label and identify the strain accurately.

Summary: Strain G314FT, isolated from Lucilia sericata in Germany, belongs to the genus Vagococcus. It shows high sequence identity with Vagococcus bubulae, Vagococcus martis, and Vagococcus teuberi, indicating that it represents a new species of the genus. The genome of G314FT is the smallest among the closely related species and has differences in amino acid biosynthesis and carbohydrate metabolism.
