Summary: Dendrimers show potential for improved extraction and transport compared to mono-functional ligands, with diglycolamide-based dendrimers exhibiting preferential transport of Eu(III) over Am(III) at higher nitric acid concentrations. The study also highlights the important role of carrier ligand concentration in transport selectivity.

Summary: A comparative study was conducted on the uptake of rare earth element ions using extraction chromatography resins with diglycolamide ligands. The results showed that the highest uptake was achieved with the resin containing N,N,N',N'-tetra-n-alkyldiglycolamide. The uptake trend of the lanthanides corresponded to their ionic potential values, and the trend of the resins' uptake capabilities was TPDGA > THDGA > TODGA > TDDGA. Column studies were carried out based on the promising batch data.

Summary: A comparative study was conducted to investigate the uptake of Eu(III) and Am(III) using four extraction chromatography (XC) resins containing tetra-n-pentyl diglycolamide (TPDGA) ligands. The results showed that the uptake of Eu(III) was higher than that of Am(III), and the uptake trend of the XC resins was opposite to the alkyl chain length of the ligands. Moreover, the uptake of both Eu(III) and Am(III) ions increased with increasing nitric acid concentration.

Summary: In this study, a strategy for the separation of actinides from lanthanides by oxidizing actinides to hexavalent oxidation states and selectively extracting them using a sterically hindered ligand, 2-ethylhexyl phosphonic acid mono-2-ethylhexyl ester (EHEHPA), was proposed. The results demonstrate the high efficiency of this method for the separation of actinides from lanthanides.

Summary: Functionalized dendrimers show promise as ligands for better extraction/transport results. In this study, a DGA-based dendrimer (TREN-G1-DGA) was used for the transport of Am(III) and Eu(III). The results showed slower transport of Am(III) compared to Eu(III), and the role of acid in metal ion transport was less important with TREN-G1-DGA as a carrier. Luminescence spectroscopy provided insight into the extraction and transport of the Eu(III) complexes.

Summary: This study investigated the solvent extraction of Zr(IV) in an undiluted phosphonium based ionic liquid and its selective separation from Ln(III) and An(III). The results showed that Zr(IV) was efficiently extracted in the IL phase without any external ligand, while Eu(III)/Am(III) were negligibly extracted, leading to significant separation factors for Zr(IV). The study also examined the thermodynamics of extraction and stripping of Zr(IV) from the IL phase using a suitable stripping solution.

Summary: This study investigated the extraction behavior of rare earth elements (REEs) from spent NdFeB magnetic scrap using N,N,N,'N'-tetra (2-ethylhexyl) diglycolamide (TEHDGA) as the extractant. The results showed that TEHDGA exhibited higher selectivity towards the heavy rare earth Dy. The optimal experimental conditions for quantitative extraction of REEs, especially Dy, were determined as 24 h contact time, 0.75 M TEHDGA concentration, 1:5 or 1:10 solid-liquid ratio, and 2-5 M feed acidity.

Summary: This paper presents the first application of a polymer inclusion membrane (PIM) for extracting the bismuth(III) ion. The optimal PIM composition was found to be 50% poly(vinyl chloride) and 50% bis(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (D2EHPA), with the best results achieved at pH 1.3 and a feed solution containing 0.2 mol L-1 sulfate.

Summary: The complexation of Eu(III), Am(III), and Cm(III) during their extraction by N,N,N',N'-ter-abutyldiglycolamide in 9 different nitric acid solutions was investigated. The composition of the extracted species was determined using slope analysis, and Kex values were calculated for all systems. The impact of the diluent nature on the extraction of the listed metal ions was examined. Additionally, a crystalline complex of Am(NO3) with N,N,N',N'-tetraethyldiglycolamide was isolated and characterized through X-ray diffraction.

Summary: BTPhen-based ligands have shown great potential in separating trivalent lanthanides and actinides. However, theoretical studies have so far failed to reproduce the experimental results showing that americium forms stronger complexes with BTPhen ligands than europium. In this study, two different forms of the metal were used, and it was found that europium forms the most stable complex with BTPhenCH ligand in the case of naked cations. On the other hand, in the case of the tetraaquatrinitrato complex, europium has a higher stabilizing effect, resulting in americium complexes with BTPhen-CH being the more stable form observed in experimental studies.

Summary: This study investigated the reactive extractions of 4-hydroxypyridine (4-HP) using tributyl phosphate (TBP), di(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA), and TBP + D2EHPA dissolved in 1-octanol. The use of a mixture of TBP and D2EHPA as extractant showed a significant intensification effect. The best extraction conditions were found to be a molar ratio of D2EHPA and TBP at 2:1 and an equilibrium aqueous pH of 3.50-4.50. The study provided insights into the extraction mechanism and offered a new approach for intensified extraction of amphoteric organic compounds.

Summary: The study described the synthesis, Eu3+ complexation, and selective solvent extraction of Am3+ over Eu3+ by A-PzPy ligands in nitric acid solution. Results showed a more favorable affinity of Am3+ than Eu3+ at high acidity levels and formation of 1:2 metal/ligand extracted species. The composition of complex and extraction mechanism were proposed based on various analytical techniques.

Summary: Long chain quarternary alkyl phosphonium based ionic liquids, particularly trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium nitrate, show promising potential as extractants for the efficient extraction and separation of trivalent Ln(III)/An(III) metals from nitric acid solutions. The use of this ionic liquid eliminates the need for additional extractants and demonstrates excellent metal loading capacity and radiation stability, making it suitable for spent nuclear fuel reprocessing.
