Objective Significant progress was made in the understanding etiopathogenic factors related to MDD, including through research on the role of micro RNAs (miRs). We investigated plasma mills as potential markers for MDD in patients treated with antidepressants. Methods At the initiation and at the end of twelve weeks of treatment, blood samples were collected and a structured diagnostic interview and a standardized depression rating scale for the presence and severity of major depression were done. The average decrease in HAMD score was 76.89%. Plasma miR expression profiling was performed by real time PCR. The lists of up-regulated (cut-off=2) and down-regulated miRs were imported into the miRWalk2.0 algorithm and used for target predictions. KEGG database pathways analysis was used to retrieve the pathways significantly targeted by at least two of the miRs. Results Of the 222 mills detected in plasma samples of MDD patients, 40 were differentially expressed after treatment. Twenty-three mills were significantly overexpressed with fold changes between 1.85 and 25.42, and 17 miRs were significantly downregulated with fold changes from 0.28 to 0.68. Pathway analysis revealed a list of 29 pathways for up-regulated miRs, and 20 pathways for down-regulated miRs. Six dysregulated mills are common to all the top five pathways (Wnt signaling, Cancer, Endocytosis, Axon guidance, MAPK signaling): miR-146a-5p, miR-221-3p, miR-24-3p, miR-26a-5p. Conclusion Overall, our miRWalk analysis of changes in plasma microRNAs after treatment of patients with major depression might open a new avenue for the understanding of Escitalopram mode of action and for its side effects.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Antiproliferative Properties of New Bio-Inspired Xanthylium Derivatives

Claudia Koch, Diana-Maria Dreava, Anamaria Todea, Francisc Peter, Mihai Medeleanu, Iulia Pausescu, Corina Samoila, Ioan Ovidiu Sirbu

Summary: Xanthylium derivatives with photochromic properties were synthesized and their biological properties were investigated. The halochromic properties and different molecular species were confirmed using UV-Vis spectroscopy and pH-jumps studies. Both compounds showed significant antiproliferative effects on P19 cells by modifying the cell cycle progression.

Summary: The high mortality risk in severe SARS-CoV-2 infections is closely related to the extreme elevation of inflammatory markers. This study examined the efficacy and outcomes of plasma exchange (TPE) based on different treatment methods in COVID-19 patients. It was found that TPE significantly reduced IL-6, CRP, and ESR levels, but had no significant impact on survival rate.

Summary: This study evaluated the early level of circulating miR-195 in Covid-19 patients and found it to be a potential biomarker of disease severity. miR-195 is associated with several clinical and paraclinical parameters and can effectively discriminate between severe and mild forms of the disease. The study also suggests a possible role of miR-195 in long Covid and chronic fatigue syndrome.

Clinical Variables Influence the Ability of miR-101, miR-150, and miR-21 to Predict Ventricular Remodeling after ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction

Liana Maries, Alexandra Ioana Moatar, Maria Sala-Cirtog, Laurentiu Sima, Andrei Anghel, Catalin Marian, Aimee Rodica Chis, Ioan-Ovidiu Sirbu

Summary: Left ventricle remodeling after acute myocardial infarction is a significant contributor to heart failure, but predicting it remains challenging. This study found that certain circulant microRNAs may not be effective in distinguishing patients with left ventricle remodeling from those without.

Plasma hsa-miR-22-3p Might Serve as an Early Predictor of Ventricular Function Recovery after ST-Elevation Acute Myocardial Infarction

Liana Maries, Alexandra Ioana Moatar, Aimee Rodica Chis, Catalin Marian, Constantin Tudor Luca, Ioan-Ovidiu Sirbu, Dan Gaita

Summary: Left ventricle remodeling after acute myocardial infarction leads to heart failure, but predicting this remodeling is challenging. This study found that the microRNA miR-22 can accurately distinguish between patients with and without left ventricle remodeling. The predictive power of miR-22 is even better when combined with other clinical variables. miR-22 may be a useful predictor of ventricular function recovery in STEMI patients.

Summary: This research investigates the association between altered lipid profiles and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP). The study finds significant elevations in Apolipoprotein B (ApoB) and Lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)) levels in pregnant women with HDP, emphasizing the importance of early detection and specialized handling of cardiovascular risks in expectant mothers.

Summary: This study compares the lipid profiles of pregnant women with and without cardiovascular risk factors, revealing that women with cardiovascular risk factors have higher rates of adverse neonatal outcomes and abnormal lipid and inflammatory profiles. These findings highlight the need for effective risk stratification and management strategies in this population.

Summary: Prostate cancer is a leading cause of cancer mortality in men worldwide, with a lack of specific early detection and staging biomarkers. This study identified five potential biomarkers for prostate cancer using metabolomics, with all the molecules displaying decreased levels in prostate cancer plasma samples. The high diagnostic accuracy of these metabolites suggests their potential as non-invasive biomarkers for prostate cancer detection.
