In apomictic Taraxacum species, the development of both the embryo and the endosperm does not require double fertilisation. However, a structural reduction of ovular transmitting tissue was not observed in apomictic dandelions. The aim of this study was to analyse the chemical composition of the cell walls to describe the presence of arabinogalactan proteins (AGPs), hemicellulose and some pectic epitopes in the micropylar transmitting tissue of apomictic Taraxacum. The results point to (1) the similar distribution of AGPs in different developmental stages, (2) the absence of highly methyl-esterified homogalacturonan (HG) in transmitting tissue of ovule containing a mature embryo sac and the appearance of this pectin domain in the young seed containing the embryo and endosperm, (3) the similar pattern of low methyl-esterified pectin occurrence in both an ovule and a young seed with an embryo and endosperm in apomictic Taraxacum and (4) the presence of hemicelluloses recognised by LM25 and LM21 antibodies in the reproductive structure of Taraxacum.

Development, Diversity and Dynamics of Plant Architecture in Utricularia subgenus Polypompholyx - Towards Understanding Evolutionary Processes in the Lentibulariaceae

Markus S. Reut, Bartosz J. Plachno

Summary: This study investigated the nature of different types of stolons in Utricularia subgenus Polypompholyx through scanning electron microscopy, as well as statistically analyzed the correlations between stolon types and other traits across 56 species. The results showed that stolon types were taxonomically relevant and correlated to the distribution/climate, and they diverged with speciation events in Australia. Additionally, the study found that seedlings of Genlisea and Polypompholyx exhibited similar developmental patterns.

Sheltered preservation of cyrtocrinid crinoids from the Lower Cretaceous of Madagascar and their palaeogeographic significance

Mariusz A. Salamon, Sreepat Jain, Marcin Krajewski, Piotr Duda, Bruno Ferr, Mohamed Benzaggagh, Bartosz J. Plachno

Summary: Sheltered preservation is a known phenomenon where organisms are trapped within cephalopod shells, providing important paleontological data. This study reports the discovery of the first crinoid preserved inside an early Albian ammonite in Madagascar. The crinoid belongs to the phyllocrinid family and represents the first finding of this family from Africa and the second from the southern margin of the Tethys. This finding highlights the potential use of ammonite shells for studying echinoderms.

Immunocytochemical Analysis of Bifid Trichomes in Aldrovanda vesiculosa L. Traps

Bartosz J. Plachno, Malgorzata Kapusta, Piotr Stolarczyk, Magdalena Wojciak, Piotr Swiatek

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the immunocytochemistry of bifid trichomes in Aldrovanda vesiculosa and compare them with digestive trichomes. Light and electron microscopy revealed the structure of these trichomes, while fluorescence microscopy showed the localization of carbohydrate epitopes. The presence of endodermal cells and transfer cells, as well as the enrichment of arabinogalactan proteins in the cell walls, indicate the active and important role of bifid trichomes in plant function, particularly in solute transport.

Phylogenetical Position versus Pollination Syndromes: Floral Trichomes of Central American and Mexican Pinguicula

Krzysztof Lustofin, Piotr Swiatek, Vitor F. O. Miranda, Bartosz J. Plachno

Summary: The study investigated the relationship between the distribution and diversity of trichomes and pollinator syndromes in Central American and Mexican Pinguicula species. It was found that species pollinated by butterflies and hummingbirds had low diversity of non-glandular trichomes mainly found in the tube and basal part of the spur. In contrast, species pollinated by flies and bees showed a high variety of non-glandular trichomes, mainly found on the surface of corolla petals and at the entrance to the spur.

Summary: This study evaluated the expression of the TSG-6 gene in MSCs derived from the umbilical cord and assessed the expression of pro-inflammatory ILs. The results showed that the expression of the TSG-6 gene in MSCs was influenced by coexisting diseases and biochemical parameters of umbilical cord blood, including cord blood pH.

The unexpected occurrence of enigmatic ' percevalicrinids ' (Echinodermata, Crinoidea) in the Lower Jurassic strata of North Africa d Implications for their stratigraphic and palaeogeographic distribution and discussion on their belonging to the subfamily Balanocrininae

Mariusz A. Salamon, Madani Benyoucef, Karolina Paszcza, Faycal Mekki, Imad Bouchemla, Bartosz J. Plachno

Summary: The study reports a diverse micro- and macrofauna, including crinoids, from the Lower Jurassic formations in Northwest Algeria. The discovery of Percevalicrinus in these formations represents its oldest record and the second one from the southern Tethyan margin. The morphology of Percevalicrinus suggests it is more closely related to Isocrininae rather than Balanocrininae. The assemblage and associated facies indicate a low-energy deep outer shelf/ramp setting.

Effect of Diosmin on Selected Parameters of Oxygen Homeostasis

Marcin Feldo, Magdalena Wojciak, Slawomir Dresler, Pawel Sowa, Bartosz J. Plachno, Dariusz Samborski, Ireneusz Sowa

Summary: Chronic venous disease (CVD) affects up to 30% of the global population and is characterized by disturbances in the microcirculation of veins. Diosmin, a phlebotropic drug, has been used in the treatment of CVD, but its molecular mechanism of action is not fully understood. In this study, patients were administered diosmin and biochemical assays were used to evaluate its effects on oxygen management, angiogenesis, and inflammation. The findings suggest that diosmin may regulate angiogenesis, inflammation, and hypoxia-inducible factor pathway in CVD.

Differences in the Occurrence of Cell Wall Components between Distinct Cell Types in Glands of Drosophyllum lusitanicum

Bartosz J. Plachno, Malgorzata Kapusta, Piotr Stolarczyk, Piotr Swiatek, Irene Lichtscheidl

Summary: Carnivorous plant Drosophyllum lusitanicum has two types of glands on its leaves, stalked mucilage glands and sessile digestive glands. The mucilage glands play a crucial role in prey lure and trapping, as well as survival in arid conditions. Investigating the cell wall composition, it was found that different cell types in the glands have distinct cell wall components.

Morphological variations and geographic distribution of the rare Middle Jurassic ammonite Oecoptychius refractus

Sreepat Jain, Mariusz A. Salamon, Guenter Schweigert, Bartosz J. Plachno

Summary: This study revisits the rare Middle Jurassic ammonite Oecoptychius refractus and finds its main occurrence in the Callovian Kosmoceras Zone and Quenstedtoceras Zone, with large morphological variation in body-chamber shape. The fossil record of O. refractus is better documented in the western Tethys (Poland, Germany, and France) compared to the eastern Tethys (Madagascar and India). The extensive palaeobiogeographic range of O. refractus may be influenced by recurrent sea level rises in the Middle Jurassic.

Karol P. P. Ruszel, Daniel P. P. Zalewski, Andrzej Stepniewski, Dariusz Galkowski, Jacek Bogucki, Marcin Feldo, Bartosz J. J. Plachno, Janusz Kocki, Anna Bogucka-Kocka

Summary: Vascular diseases are leading causes of death and morbidity, and there is a need for new biomarkers for monitoring and potential treatment. Next-generation sequencing of mRNA revealed significant differences in the expression of DNA repair-related genes in abdominal aortic aneurysm, chronic venous disease, and lower extremity artery disease, which could be utilized for the design of new biomarkers or therapies associated with these diseases.
