Summary: This study investigated the optical and nuclear radiation shielding properties of barium titanate (BaTiO3) nanoparticles doped in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). The results confirmed the successful preparation of nanocomposite films. The inclusion of BaTiO3 nanoparticles significantly reduced the optical bandgap and maintained a moderate transmittance level. The optimal weight percentage of BaTiO3 in PMMA for attenuation of gamma ray and neutron radiation was determined to be 10 wt (%) and 15 wt (%), respectively.

Summary: This study produced composite materials using a combination of natural rubber and acrylonitrile butadiene rubber, along with nano-silica-loaded bismuth (III) oxide. The properties of the composites at different concentrations of Bi2O3 were tested, including gamma attenuation properties and mechanical properties. The results showed that the composites with a concentration of 20 phr exhibited the highest tensile strength and elongation at break. The composites also showed potential for radiation protection applications.

Summary: The shielding efficiencies of ternary composites containing polyester resin, polyacrylonitrile and gadolinium (III) sulfate against gamma and neutron radiations were investigated. Experimentally, theoretically, and using the GEANT4 simulation code, various parameters such as linear and mass attenuation coefficients, half value layer, effective atomic number, radiation protection efficiency, inelastic, elastic, capture and transport numbers, total macroscopic cross section, mean free path, and number of transmitted neutrons were determined to evaluate the shielding capacity. The study found that increasing the amount of gadolinium (III) sulfate improved gamma radiation shielding properties, while increasing the amount of polyacrylonitrile improved neutron shielding properties. The composite coded P0Gd50 exhibited better gamma radiation shielding ability, while the neutron shielding of the sample coded P50Gd0 was also more favorable.

Summary: Novel materials with neutron shielding property were developed by incorporating boron compounds into HDPE/EPDM blends. The morphology, thermal, mechanical, and neutron attenuation properties of the blends were investigated. Results showed that the addition of EPDM improved the ductility of HDPE, but reduced its tensile strength and modulus. The BA and BC filled composites exhibited lower tensile strength and modulus but significantly increased tensile toughness. The NBC filled composites showed only marginal improvements in tensile toughness, tensile strength, and modulus.

Summary: The synthesis of electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding composites is an effective strategy to combat electromagnetic radiation pollution. In this study, Mn0.6Zn0.4Fe2O4 (MZF) and carbon black (CB) were added to a emulsion made of Eucommia ulmoides rubber (EUR) and epoxy resin (EP) to prepare the MZF/CB/PEUR (EP@EUR) composites. The uniform distribution of CB created a conductive network that facilitated dipole polarization and conduction losses. Additionally, the inclusion of MZF provided a shielding mechanism through natural resonance and enhancement of the conducting network, resulting in an optimized complex dielectric constant and a high-level resonance peak in the 8.2-12.4 GHz frequency range. By conducting a series of filler loading experiments, the optimal loading concentrations of CB (5%) and MZF (25%) were determined. Furthermore, the MZF/CB/PEUR composites exhibited excellent corrosion resistance in acid/alkali environments. These findings contribute to the development, application, and mechanism research of environment-friendly dielectric-magnetic EMI shielding composites using EUR as a matrix.

Summary: In this study, a hollow CuO/Cu2O octahedron adsorbent was prepared with a carambola matrix shape via the hydrothermal method. The CuO/Cu2O octahedron was modified by silane emulsion self-assembly and then molecularly imprinted with dopamine to obtain Cu@B@PW9@MIPs. This adsorbent showed high efficiency in removing phenol and has the potential to become a promising biological enzyme catalyst for dephenolization.

Summary: This study examined the relationship between SII, NLR, and PLR with clinical findings of RSV infection in children with LRTI. The results showed that CRP levels were higher in RSV positive cases, while NLR, PLR, and SII were lower in these cases. CRP performed better than other blood parameters as a marker. Determining the cause of the disease using these parameters can aid in disease management and avoid unnecessary antibiotic use.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the monocyte count and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and their ratio in patients with deep venous thrombosis and investigate whether this ratio can indicate thrombus burden in terms of thrombus location. The results showed a significantly higher monocyte/high-density lipoprotein ratio in deep venous thrombosis patients compared to the control group.
