The lateral transport of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) plays an important role in linking the carbon cycles of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Neglecting the lateral flow of dissolved organic carbon can lead to an underestimation of the organic carbon budget of terrestrial ecosystems. It is thus necessary to integrate DOC concentrations and flux into carbon cycle models, particularly with regard to the development of models that are intended to directly link terrestrial and ocean carbon cycles. However, to achieve this goal, more accurate information is needed to better understand and predict DOC dynamics. In this study, we compiled an inclusive database of available data collected from the Yangtze River, Yellow River and Pearl River in China. The database is collected based on online literature survey and analysed by statistic method. Overall, our results revealed a positive correlation between DOC flux and discharge in all three rivers, whereas the DOC concentration was more strongly correlated with the regional net primary productivity (NPP). We estimated the total DOC flux exported by the three rivers into the China Sea to be approximately 2.73 Tg yr(-1). Specifically, the annual flux of DOC from the Yangtze River, Yellow River and Pearl River was estimated to be 1.85 Tg yr(-1), 0.06 Tg yr(-1) and 0.82 Tg yr(-1), respectively, and the average annual DOC concentrations were estimated to be 2.24 +/- 0.53 mg L-1, 2.70 +/- 0.38 mg L-1 and 1.51 +/- 0.09 mg L-1, respectively. Seasonal variations in DOC concentrations are greatly influenced by the interaction between temperature and precipitation. NPP is significantly and positively related to the DOC concentration in the Yangtze River and the Pearl River. In addition, differences in climate and the productivity of the vegetation may influence both the flux and concentrations of DOC transported by the rivers and thus potentially affect estuarine geochemistry.

The Effects of Drought and Re-Watering on Non-Structural Carbohydrates of Pinus tabulaeformis Seedlings

Xinyi Guo, Changhui Peng, Tong Li, Jingjing Huang, Hanxiong Song, Qiuan Zhu, Meng Wang

Summary: The study demonstrated that pine seedlings exhibit strong drought resistance by allocating non-structural carbohydrates to roots and depleting starch storage during drought stress. After re-watering, starch storage was rebuilt. This indicates the important role of non-structural carbohydrates, especially starch, in the survival of plants under drought conditions and highlights the strategies for carbohydrate allocation post-drought stress.

Woody plants reduce the sensitivity of soil extracellular enzyme activity to nutrient enrichment in wetlands: A meta-analysis

Tong Li, Changhui Peng, Zhaojun Bu, Qiuan Zhu, Hanxiong Song, Xinyi Guo, Meng Wang

Summary: Nitrogen enrichment increased C- and P-acquiring EEAs in both categories of wetlands. However, for P enrichment, significant responses of soil EEAs were observed in moss/sedge-dominated wetlands only: beta-1,4-glucosidase activity increased 76% but phosphatase activity decreased 78%, on average. Woody plants may override microbial response to nutrient enrichment and mitigate the negative effect of nutrient enrichment on soil organic C stock.

Leaf Trait Covariation and Its Controls: A Quantitative Data Analysis Along a Subtropical Elevation Gradient

Yanzheng Yang, Ruikun Gou, Wei Li, Jalal Kassout, Jun Wu, Liming Wang, Changhui Peng, Guanghui Lin

Summary: The study found that the variations in leaf functional traits were mainly caused by differences within the same site; N-mass and LDMC were positively correlated with soil water content (SW) and negatively correlated with vapor pressure deficit (VPD), while chi showed negative relationships with elevation. Climate, soil, and family controls together explained 78% of the variation in the studied plant functional traits, with family distribution being the most important determining factor for trait covariation along the elevation gradient.

Stable oxic-anoxic transitional interface is beneficial to retard soil carbon loss in drained peatland

Liangfeng Liu, Jianqing Tian, Hongjun Wang, Dan Xue, Xinya Huang, Ning Wu, Xingliang Xu, Meng Wang, Changhui Peng, Yanfen Wang, Huai Chen

Summary: Peatlands are important for global carbon sequestration, but they have been severely drained. This study investigated the CO2 release at the oxic-anoxic transitional (OAO) interface in drained peatlands in response to climate warming and exogenous carbon addition. The results showed that the carbon at the OAO interface was complex and the microbial activity and diversity were lowest at this interface. The CO2 emission at the OAO interface was least affected by warming, but highly sensitive to exogenous carbons. Maintaining a stable OAO interface can help reduce carbon loss in drained peatlands, but the priming effect caused by exogenous carbons needs to be addressed.

Land Use, Climate, and Socioeconomic Factors Determine the Variation in Hydrologic-Related Ecosystem Services in the Ecological Conservation Zone, Beijing, China

Lijuan Li, Yanzheng Yang, Tengyu Cui, Ruonan Li, Hua Zheng

Summary: The hydrologic-related ecosystem services in upstream ecological conservation zones play an important role in regulating water scarcity and conflicts downstream. However, the combined effects of socioeconomic, land use, and climate factors on these services have not been well analyzed, leading to a lack of understanding about their spatial heterogeneity and drivers. In this study, the InVEST model and multivariate analysis were used to assess the interactions of these factors on hydrologic-related ecosystem services in the Beijing Ecological Conservation Development Zone. The results show significant temporal and spatial heterogeneity in water yield and purification services, with land use having the largest impact followed by climate and socioeconomic factors.
