Summary: The study aimed to investigate the host specificity of the cotton-melon aphid and whether bacterial symbionts control the host specificity. The results showed that the host specificity of the cotton-melon aphid is not controlled by specific bacterial symbionts or by Buchnera abundance.

Summary: This study found that afidopyropen exhibits high acute toxicity to cotton aphids. Sublethal concentrations of afidopyropen significantly decrease adult lifespan, fecundity, and oviposition days, as well as prolong the developmental and reproductive periods of the progeny. Additionally, the population parameters of the progeny, such as net reproductive rate, intrinsic rate of increase, and finite rate of increase, are significantly reduced by exposure to sublethal concentrations of afidopyropen.

Summary: Cotton is a key industrial crop in China, but the resistance of cotton aphids to pesticides poses a serious threat. Cyproflanilide has demonstrated effectiveness against cotton aphids, and its baseline susceptibility in field populations was determined. Field populations of cotton aphids were collected from major cotton-producing regions in China in 2021, and their susceptibilities to cyproflanilide were tested. The results showed that cyproflanilide was highly toxic to all populations of cotton aphids, while they exhibited high resistance to imidacloprid. Cyproflanilide is therefore a useful tool for monitoring and managing resistance in cotton aphids.

Summary: The complete mitochondrial genome of Aphis gossypii Glover cucumber biotype was sequenced, revealing a genome length of 15,870 bp with 37 typical mitochondrial genes. The base composition of the genome is mainly A, T, C, and G, with varying percentages. Analysis identified multiple single nucleotide polymorphisms and an insertion and deletion in two A. gossypii biotypes' mitogenomes.

Summary: This study found that the combination of certain insecticides with the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae was more effective in controlling the cotton aphid than individual treatments. The toxicity of the insecticides was consistent with their compatibility with the fungus, with the combination of flonicamid and M. anisopliae showing the highest mortality rate.

Summary: This study found two distinct genetic clusters in the cotton aphid populations in Korea, but there was no apparent correlation between the genetic structures and resistance profiles. Bioassay results showed different resistance and susceptibility patterns to different insecticides among populations. The results suggest that the formation of genetic structures in Korean cotton aphid populations may be influenced by factors other than insecticide resistance traits.

Summary: Aphids provide a good model system to understand ecological speciation, with host-specific species often being complexes of host-specialized biotypes. By investigating two closely related aphid species with multiple primary hosts, researchers found evidence of ecological specialization through primary host shift and introgression through hybridization. This study contributes to a new perspective in aphid evolution, identifying complex evolutionary trends in the gossypii sensu lato complex.

Summary: This study analyzed the resistance status of cotton aphid populations in the largest cotton plantation areas of Turkey. The results showed moderate to high resistance levels in neonicotinoid insecticides acetamiprid and imidacloprid, and low to medium levels in thiamethoxam. The resistance observed may be due to metabolic resistance mechanisms. Additionally, the study revealed cross-resistance between neonicotinoids.

Summary: In this study, the dynamic changes of symbiotic bacteria during the reproductive morph switch in Aphis gossypii were investigated using 16S rRNA sequencing technology. The results showed that the species richness and community diversity of symbiotic bacteria in males were the highest. The dominant bacterial phylum was Proteobacteria (with a relative abundance of more than 90%), and the dominant genus was Buchnera (with a relative abundance of >90%).

Summary: The mitochondrial genome of A. gossypii isolated from Leonurus japonicus in Korea has been determined to be a circular molecule of 16,044 bp, containing various genes and a control region. A comparison with the mitochondrial genome of A. gossypii from cotton species revealed 88 SNPs and 4 INDELs. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the four A. gossypii mitogenomes formed a distinct clade.

Summary: The study found that the Heterorhabditis beicherriana LF strain exhibited higher pathogenicity against Holotrichia parallela larvae, with good control effectiveness at optimal temperature and soil moisture. It was compatible with Bt (HBF18). Combinations of EPNs and Bt showed higher mortality rates for H. parallela larvae compared to using nematodes alone, particularly when Bt (HBF-18) was combined with EPNs at LC50 concentrations.

Summary: This study characterized the bacterial microbiota of L. japonica wasps and monitored changes in the microbiota of their parasitized and nonparasitized aphid hosts over time. Parasitism was associated with an increase in abundance of Buchnera nutritional endosymbionts in aphid hosts, while the abundance of other facultative symbionts decreased. Functional analysis revealed differences in specific pathways in parasitized aphids. The findings suggest that the exchange of symbiotic microbes may play a role in the evolution and ecology of host-parasitoid interactions.

Summary: The study showed that the diversity and abundance of spiders in Bt cotton fields is influenced by seasonal variations, with Hylyphantes graminicola and Neoscona theisi being the two most common species in the population. The spiders exhibited different hunting habits, with the highest number of species belonging to the direct hunting guild. The composition and community structure of microbiota varied among spider species, with Proteobacteria being the most abundant bacterial phylum and Wolbachia being the top genus observed in the spiders.

Summary: This study successfully induced the production of GPe and males in cotton aphids by transferring newly-born nymphs to short photoperiod conditions (8 L:16D, 18 degrees C). The external morphological characters, especially wing vein patterns, were similar among WPFs, GPe, and males, while their reproductive organs were strikingly different. Shared and exclusively expressed genes in the three-wing morphs were identified through RNA-Seq, along with several signaling pathways potentially involved in their wing differentiation, including insulin signaling and starch and sucrose metabolism.
