Summary: The study revealed that high levels of NT-proBNP in patients admitted with COVID-19 are associated with increased mortality and healthcare resource utilization. Patients with high NT-proBNP had fewer out-of-hospital, ICU-free, and ventilator-free days compared to those with low NT-proBNP.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of the Abbott NT-proBNP assay compared to the Roche NT-proBNP immunoassay at two sites. Precision, linearity, and sensitivity studies were conducted, and a regression analysis was performed. The results showed excellent agreement between the two assays, with slight bias in the Roche assay. The age groups recommended for acute heart failure diagnosis by ESC/AHA were also applicable to the Abbott assay.

Summary: The study compared the diagnostic accuracy of two NT-proBNP assays and found that the clinical value of total NT-proBNP for HF diagnosis was similar to the non-glycosylated subfraction of NT-proBNP. The lower percentage of non-glycosylated NT-proBNP to total NT-proBNP in non-HF patients suggests that total NT-proBNP might be more sensitive in individuals without current or prior symptoms of HF.

Summary: Recognizing symptoms in elderly patients with severe aortic stenosis (AS) can be challenging. This study tested the usefulness of NT-proBNP and Galectin-3 in predicting events in asymptomatic patients with severe AS. The results showed that NT-proBNP was the most reliable predictor of events, and a combination of NT-proBNP and Galectin-3 levels may be vital in the clinical follow-up and decision-making process for these patients.

Summary: This study assessed the effect of vericiguat on changes in NT-proBNP levels and its relationship with clinical outcomes. The results showed that vericiguat treatment led to a significant decline in NT-proBNP levels, which was associated with a relative improvement in the primary outcome of cardiovascular death or heart failure hospitalization.

Summary: The study demonstrates that NT-proBNP can serve as a surrogate for clinical outcomes in HF trials, with a well-described relationship between NT-proBNP concentration and clinical events using an E-max model. Quantitative analysis provided insights into potential risks and risks associated with clinical events. Model-based predictions solely based on NT-proBNP measurements match final trial results, and early NT-proBNP measurements enable shorter yet reliable HF trials.

Summary: The present study aimed to investigate the suitability of NT-proBNP as a biomarker for predicting extubation failure in critically ill neonates with pulmonary hypertension or ventricular dysfunction. The results showed that there were differences in the absolute values of NT-proBNP before and after extubation, and the Zlog transformation of NT-proBNP could better predict the occurrence of extubation failure.

Summary: The use of glucocorticoid drugs like dexamethasone for severe COVID-19 patients, especially those requiring mechanical ventilation or supplemental oxygen therapy, has shown the largest benefit. However, there may be no benefit for patients without hypoxemia. Administering dexamethasone after several days of symptoms can lead to positive outcomes, but early administration may have potential harm, with the optimum time for glucocorticoid administration still being debated.

Summary: Hospitalization for acute SARS-CoV-2 infection significantly increases the risk of post-discharge mortality and loss of functional independence among older patients. Cardiovascular diseases and respiratory failure are the most common causes of death. Pre-morbid activities of daily living (ADL) and frailty level are important factors associated with mortality and loss of independence.

Summary: This study aimed to examine the association between dietary fibre intake and cognitive decline in older adults. The results showed that dietary fibre intake was not associated with cognitive decline over a 15-year period. However, there was a significant interaction between fibre intake and the APOE-e4 haplotype, with a 30% lower risk of cognitive decline in participants with this genetic variant.

Summary: This study assessed the performance of the rapid molecular VitaPCR(TM) test in older adult patients at the Emergency Department of two Italian hospitals. The VitaPCR(TM) showed good agreement with the RT-PCR and had a sensitivity of 83.4% and specificity of 99.9% for detecting SARS-CoV-2. It can be used for rapid management of patients in the Emergency Department, but a negative result from RT-PCR is advisable before admitting a patient to a regular ward.

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the lung sequelae and clinical consequences in older patients 3 and 6 months after hospitalization for COVID-19 pneumonia. The study included 55 patients aged 65 years and older. CT scans and assessments of daily living activities and clinical frailty were performed at baseline and after 3 and 6 months. The results showed that 22% of the subjects still had ground-glass opacities after 6 months, while consolidations were no longer visible. Fibrotic-like changes were found in 40% of the subjects, mainly males. Worsening daily living activities and clinical frailty were associated with comorbidities.

Summary: This study aimed to identify clusters of hospitalized older COVID-19 patients and evaluate their association with in-hospital mortality. Three clusters were identified, with increasing mortality risk from cluster 1 to cluster 3. Patients in cluster 3 were older and had higher prevalence of comorbidities and inflammation markers. The addition of frailty assessment improved the predictive ability for in-hospital mortality.
