Copper nanoparticles against benzimidazole-resistant Monilinia fructicola field isolates

Anastasios A. Malandrakis, Nektarios Kavroulakis, Constantinos V. Chrysikopoulos

Summary: Nano-fungicides are expected to be important in future plant disease management, with their unique properties such as broad antimicrobial action and increased effectiveness. Copper nanoparticles show significant inhibitory effects on Monilinia fructicola and can synergize with other drugs to enhance antifungal activity. Their mode of action may involve ATP-dependent metabolism and nanoparticle-induced mechanisms.

Strong host-specific selection and over-dominance characterize arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal root colonizers of coastal sand dune plants of the Mediterranean region

M. Tsiknia, V Skiada, I. Ipsilantis, S. Vasileiadis, N. Kavroulakis, S. Genitsaris, K. K. Papadopoulou, M. Hart, J. Klironomos, D. G. Karpouzas, C. Ehaliotis

Summary: The assembly of root-colonizing AMF communities in the eastern Mediterranean sand dunes is mainly driven by host specificity, with geographical distance having little influence. The colonizer AMF communities are characterized by dominance of a single OTU that is host-specific among locations. Sites with small disturbances exhibit greater dissimilarity in AMF communities compared to undisturbed sites.

Metal nanoparticles: Phytotoxicity on tomato and effect on symbiosis with the Fusarium solani FsK strain

Anastasios A. Malandrakis, Nektarios Kavroulakis, Marianna Avramidou, Kalliope K. Papadopoulou, Georgios Tsaniklidis, Constantinos Chrysikopoulos

Summary: The study investigated the effects of copper, silver, and zinc oxide nanoparticles on tomato plants and their symbiotic relationship with an endophytic fungus. Results showed that nanoparticles had toxic effects on the fungus, leading to inhibition of growth and spore germination, as well as impacting plant root length and dry weight. Additionally, a oxidative stress response was observed in treated plants, with reduced chlorophyll levels. The presence of the endophyte in roots seemed to alleviate the toxicity of certain nanoparticles, suggesting a potential reciprocal benefit between the fungus and the plant.

Fungicide resistance frequencies of Botrytis cinerea greenhouse isolates and molecular detection of a novel SDHI resistance mutation

Anastasios A. Malandrakis, Nikolaos Krasagakis, Nektarios Kavroulakis, Aris Ilias, Anastasia Tsagkarakou, John Vontas, Emmanouil Markakis

Summary: The sensitivity of B. cinerea to commonly used fungicides, particularly the newer QoIs and SDHIs, was assessed in Crete. High frequencies of double resistance to SDHIs and QoIs were found, indicating the need for appropriate anti-resistance strategies.

Zinc nanoparticles: Mode of action and efficacy against boscalid-resistant Alternaria alternata isolates

Anastasios A. Malandrakis, Nektarios Kavroulakis, Constantinos V. Chrysikopoulos

Summary: The antifungal potential of ZnO-NPs against Alternaria alternata isolates with reduced sensitivity to the succinate dehydrogenase inhibitor (SDHI) boscalid was evaluated. ZnO-NPs effectively inhibited mycelial growth, especially when combined with boscalid. The study found that zinc ion release and nanoparticle properties interfering with cellular ion homeostasis mechanisms may contribute to the fungitoxic effect of ZnO-NPs, and ROS production may also play a role.
