Collisional effects can play an essential role in the dynamics of plasma waves by setting a minimum damping rate and by interfering with wave-particle resonances. Kinetic simulations of the effects of electron-ion pitch angle scattering on Electron Plasma Waves (EPWs) are presented here. In particular, the effects of such collisions on the frequency and damping of small-amplitude EPWs for a range of collision rates and wave phase velocities are computed and compared with theory. Both the Vlasov simulations and linear kinetic theory find the direct contribution of electron-ion collisions to wave damping significantly reduced from that obtained through linearized fluid theory. To our knowledge, this simple result has not been published before. Simulations have been carried out using a grid-based (Vlasov) approach, based on a high-order conservative finite difference method for discretizing the Fokker-Planck equation describing the evolution of the electron distribution function. Details of the implementation of the collision operator within this framework are presented. Such a grid-based approach, which is not subject to numerical noise, is of particular interest for the accurate measurements of the wave damping rates. (C) 2016 AIP Publishing LLC.

Moment approach of the multi-species non-linear Coulomb collision operator adapted to particle-in-cell codes

Summary: This article derives an approximate version of the multi-species, non-linear Coulomb collision operator and efficiently solves the evolution of the distribution function within a Fokker-Planck equation using a Langevin approach in the PIC framework. The implemented collision operator in the global gyrokinetic PIC code ORB5 ensures exact conservation of density, total momentum, and energy, while successfully retrieving neoclassical physics. Additionally, numerical aspects such as noise control and code parallelization are presented in detail.

Nonlinear kinetic simulation study of the ion-ion streaming instability in single- and multi-ion species plasmas

Summary: This study investigates the nonlinear evolution of the ion-ion streaming instability (IISI) using novel numerical techniques, revealing how different species of ions can exhibit starkly different behaviors when interacting with multiple species. The research shows that the IISI can cause lighter ion species to be completely stopped by heavier ion species without collisions, and for the first time demonstrates how the IISI can introduce relative flow between initially stationary ion species with the same velocities.

Summary: Global gradient driven gyrokinetic simulations using the GENE code were used to study Tokamak plasmas with negative triangularity. It was found that negative triangularity can improve electron energy confinement and reduce electron density fluctuations, with nonlocal effects playing a role in heat flux estimation. Despite the sensitivity of turbulence level to input parameters, global effects are crucial in reconciling simulations and experiments.

Summary: This paper derives a quasilinear operator for wave-particle interactions in the electron cyclotron range using a numerically efficient treatment, based on the cold plasma dispersion relation. The specific case of pure heating injected at the outer mid-plane is then treated, simplifying the implementation of the source term in the gyrokinetic code. The source operator derivation and verification are presented.

Effect of collisions on non-adiabatic electron dynamics in ITG-driven microturbulence

C. J. Ajay, Stephan Brunner, Justin Ball

Summary: The non-adiabatic electron response in ion temperature gradient eigenmodes leads to significant changes with extended fine-structures at mode rational surfaces. Collisions decrease the linear growth rate of these modes and result in a more adiabatic-like electron response. Collisions also broaden the radial width of fine-structures and the parallel scale length of the tails is shown to scale with the mean free path of electrons.

Summary: Long global gyrokinetic turbulence simulations face challenges when the system deviates strongly from its initial state and when fluctuation levels are high. Ultra long turbulent eddies, magnetic topology, and the triggering of internal transport barriers in tokamaks

Arnas Volcokas, Justin Ball, Stephan Brunner

Summary: Local nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations of tokamak plasmas reveal that turbulent eddies can extend along magnetic field lines for long distances when the magnetic shear is small. The self-interaction of these "ultra long" eddies can greatly reduce heat transport, providing novel strategies for improving confinement and experimentally testable predictions.
