We investigated perfluorinated carboxylic acids (PFCAs) with 7-14 carbon atoms (C7-C14) in the Yodo River system in 2013. C7-C11 were detected at most sampling sites. The range and median of total PFCAs (Sigma PFCAs) concentrations were 1.0-89.7 and 11.2 ng L-1, respectively. The dominant component was C8 (average for all samples = 53.3 +/- 8.8%), followed by C7 (19.2 +/- 6.7%) and C9 (17.6 +/- 7.1%). The levels of C8 were confirmed to decrease greatly over the last 10 years. We assessed the fluxes in C7-C11 discharged from the basin based on the concentrations in river water and river flow rate. The flux of discharged Sigma PFCAs was 237.0 g d(-1) at the most downriver point of the assessment areas. Considering the variability in flow rate due to precipitation, the annual Sigma PFCAs flux was estimated to be 86.5-173.4 kg y(-1). Identification and quantification of PFCAs sources is difficult because the strength of the sources changes with time, and available information is quite limited. Further monitoring and investigation are necessary to understand sources of PFCAs, as well as their potential for human exposure. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Review of the limitations and potential empirical improvements of the parametric group method of data handling for rainfall modelling

Ronald William Lake, Saeed Shaeri, S. T. M. L. D. Senevirathna

Summary: This study further explores the application of the parametric group method of data handling (GMDH) in rainfall modeling and prediction using publicly available temperature and rainfall data. The ordinary GMDH approaches do not provide conclusive results due to lack of consistency in coefficients of determination and analysis of variance. Therefore, an empirical assessment is conducted to explain this inconsistency and improvements such as hybridization with least square support vector machines (LSSVM), application of filters for parameter estimation, and combination with signal processing techniques are investigated.

Hsp70.1 carbonylation induces lysosomal cell death for lifestyle-related diseases

Tetsumori Yamashima, Takuya Seike, Shinji Oikawa, Hatasu Kobayashi, Hidenori Kido, Masahiro Yanagi, Daisuke Yamamiya, Shihui Li, Piyakarn Boontem, Eishiro Mizukoshi

Summary: Alzheimer's disease, type 2 diabetes, and NASH are increasingly common disorders. Individuals with type 2 diabetes are prone to Alzheimer's disease. The pathogenesis of these disorders is multifactorial, but oxidative damage caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS) may play a common role. The lipid peroxidation product hydroxynonenal has been implicated in cell degeneration and death in the brain, pancreas, and liver.

Using fish swimming ability to refine criteria for fishway construction in Myanmar

John Conallin, Nyi Nyi Tun, Aye Myint Swe, Lee J. Baumgartner, Zau Lunn, Martin Mallen-Cooper, Tim Marsden, Nathan Ning, Wayne Robinson, Lalantha Senevirathna, Peter Thew

Summary: The construction of dams and other river infrastructures is threatening the population of migratory fish species by reducing river-floodplain connectivity. Fishways are important tools for restoring river connectivity for these fishes, but their effectiveness is often limited by a lack of biological information on the target species, especially in developing countries. This study aimed to inform the design of a vertical-slot fishway for migratory fishes in Myanmar. The results showed that the ability of fish to pass through the flume was influenced by hydraulic conditions and fish size. Obtaining baseline biological information on the target species is crucial for optimizing the effectiveness of planned fishways.

Water fluoridation in Australia: A systematic review

Lalantha Senevirathna, Himali Erandathie Ratnayake, Nadeeka Jayasinghe, Jinlong Gao, Xiaoyan Zhou, Shanika Nanayakkara

Summary: Water fluoridation is a safe and effective public health strategy to improve oral health. This review provides a comprehensive summary of the available evidence on water fluoridation in Australia, including its history, health impacts, cost effectiveness, challenges, and limitations. The findings show that water fluoridation has significantly reduced dental caries in the Australian population and is considered a cost-effective intervention, although it faces challenges in terms of opposition, costs, access, communication, and ethical concerns. Overall, the review highlights the importance of ongoing monitoring and research to ensure the sustainable benefits of water fluoridation. Rating: 9/10.

Dietary Exposure to Dicofol, Endosulfan, and Naturally Produced Halogenated Bipyrroles: 24-hr Food Duplicate Surveys from Five Prefectures in Japan

Yukiko Fujii, Kouji H. Harada, Yoshihisa Kato, Osamu Kimura, Tetsuya Endo, Koichi Haraguchi

Summary: This study evaluated the regional source dietary exposure of anthropogenic organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and halogenated natural products (HNPs) in Japan. The results showed that dicofol and endosulfan were the main OCPs, while Cl-7-MBP and Br4Cl2-DBP were the main HNPs. The exposure levels of these compounds differed from those of other OCPs and HNPs, indicating different sources. Further research is needed to identify the sources of these compounds and assess their risks to human health.

Performance of regional water purification plants during extreme weather events: three case studies from New South Wales, Australia

Adrian Hickey, Lalantha Senevirathna

Summary: Climate change is causing more frequent extreme weather events, such as floods, droughts, and heatwaves, which are impacting water supply systems globally. Water agencies and utilities need to develop resilient and adaptable systems to cope with these challenges. Case studies, like the one on water quality and supply management in New South Wales, demonstrate the importance of effective water treatment processes and collaboration among local governments to ensure a secure and reliable water supply during extreme weather events.
