Azoxystrobin is a frequently used fungicide in agriculture. Its toxicological effects on non-target organisms have aroused attention. In the present work, the toxic effects of azoxystrobin on zebrafish (Danio rerio) were investigated. Male and female zebrafish were separately exposed to a control solution and three azoxystrobin treatments (1, 10, and 100 mu g/L) and were sampled on days 7, 14, 21, and 28. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) were accumulated in excess in the zebrafish livers. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity was significantly inhibited in the male zebrafish. Moreover, a notable decrease was also observed after day 21 in the female zebrafish. Catalase (CAT) activity was induced by the azoxystrobin treatments with the exception of the 1 mu g/L treatment. A significant increase in glutathione-S-transferase (GST) activity was observed after day 21. Lipid peroxidation (LPO) was generated, and DNA damage was enhanced in a concentration-dependent manner. In conclusion, azoxystrobin induced oxidative stress and genotoxicity in zebrafish livers. (C) 2016 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Dibutyl phthalate induced oxidative stress and genotoxicity on adult zebrafish (Danio rerio) brain

Nan Jiang, Peipei Song, Xianxu Li, Lusheng Zhu, Jinhua Wang, Xianqiang Yin, Jun Wang

Summary: The study found that low concentrations of DBP can cause oxidative damage and genotoxicity in the zebrafish brain, demonstrating clear toxic effects. Assessment of DBP's toxic effects on zebrafish brain can be effectively evaluated by measuring biomarkers such as SOD and CAT activities.

Lingxi Han, Tong Liu, Kuan Fang, Xianxu Li, Xiangwei You, Yiqiang Li, Xiuguo Wang, Jun Wang

Summary: This study investigated indigenous functional microbial communities associated with the degradation of chloroacetamide herbicides in soil. Biodegradation was found to be the main process for the degradation of ACE, S-MET and their enantiomers, with specific bacterial genera like Amycolatopsis and Saccharomonospora playing key roles in the preferential degradation of the S-enantiomers.

Mechanism for biodegradation of sulfamethazine by Bacillus cereus H38

Zikun Dong, Xiaojing Yan, Jinhua Wang, Lusheng Zhu, Jun Wang, Chenyu Li, Wenjie Zhang, Shengfang Wen, Young Mo Kim

Summary: This study isolated a bacterium Bacillus cereus H38 that can use sulfamethazine (SMZ) as its only carbon source, and investigated the effects of environmental factors on the biodegradation of SMZ. The results showed that the maximum degradation rate of SMZ was achieved under the conditions of an initial SMZ concentration of 5 mg/L, pH of 7.0, temperature of 25 degrees C and inoculation amount of 5%. The study also identified possible intermediates and proposed two degradation pathways.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence of phthalic acid esters (PAEs) in protected agriculture soils and assessed their potential health risks to humans. The results showed that DEHP and DBP were the most abundant PAEs found in the soils, while DMP and DEP were not detected. Health risk assessment revealed that children have higher health risks compared to adults.

Analysis of the toxic mechanisms of fluoxastrobin on the earthworm (Eisenia fetida) using transcriptomics

Jingwen Zhang, Cheng Zhang, Yong Zhang, Zhongkun Du, Bing Li, Jinhua Wang, Jun Wang, Lusheng Zhu

Summary: A study found that the widely used fungicide fluoxastrobin accumulates in soil and exhibits greater toxicity in natural soils, particularly in alkaline soils. Transcriptomics analysis revealed that exposure to fluoxastrobin leads to differential gene expression in earthworms, mainly associated with protein folding, immunity, signal transduction, and cell growth pathways. This study fills gaps in the literature regarding soil bio-toxicity of strobilurin fungicides and raises alarm about the application of such fungicides even at low concentrations (0.1 mg kg-1).

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of environmental concentrations of atrazine on the soil microbial community. The results showed that the number of culturable bacteria, fungi, and actinomycetes decreased significantly with the increase of atrazine concentration, showing a certain dose-effect relationship. Overall, this study demonstrates that atrazine has a certain influence on soil microorganisms and provides an objective assessment of the ecological risk of atrazine to soil microorganisms.
