Since the use of malachite green was banned, it is desirable to search for alternative drug to control Ichthyophthirius multifiliis infection. Moreover, route of administration which is easy to implement and less stressful to fish is important to treat infection of fish with this parasite. It is also important to enhance protective effect against Aeromonas hydrophila infection after parasitism by I. multifiliis. The present study evaluated the protective effect of diet supplemented with Artemisia annua against I. multifiliis and A. hydrophila infection after the parasitism. The results showed that oral administration with A. annua at a concentration of 20 g/kg feed for 45 days can provide strong protection against I. multifiliis infection. The incidence of infestation and mean number of trophonts on fish fins on day 3 post-challenge (15,000 theronts/fish) were significantly reduced compared with the control, and the survival rate of fish during 15-day period was also increased by nearly 30 %. But, this diet provided very limited protection against higher infection dose. Besides, this study demonstrated that this diet enhanced protective effect against A. hydrophila after the fish were infected with I. multifiliis. On the basis of the above results, oral administration with A. annua can be used as a potential strategy for control I. multifiliis infection and increasing fish survival after parasitism by I. multifiliis.

Evaluation on the antiviral activity of Bacillus velezensis extract against spring viremia of carp virus

Kaige Song, Fei Luo, Weichao Chen, Xiaozhou Qi, Yufeng Shen, Jiwei Zha, Fei Ling, Gaoxue Wang

Summary: The ethyl acetate extract from Bacillus velezensis JW supernatant (EJW) showed highly efficient anti-SVCV activity both in vitro and in vivo, inhibiting early events of SVCV replication and increasing the survival rate of infected common carp. Furthermore, EJW up-regulated the expression of antiviral immune genes, indicating its potential as a promising antiviral strategy against SVCV.

Malformed largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) are more susceptible and vulnerable to Ichthyophthirius multifiliis infections: Immunological and histopathological study

Shen-Ye Qu, Xiao-Ping Tan, Bing-Ke Li, Jie-Tao Liu, Gao-Xue Wang, Fei Ling

Summary: This study reports the first record of Ichthyophthirius multifiliis infection in Micropterus salmoides. Malformed fish suffer from more serious Ichthyophthiriasis compared to normal fish. Weak immune response and more tissue damage in malformed fish increase susceptibility to pathogens.

Pharmacokinetics of magnolol following different routes of administration to goldfish (Carassius auratus) and its oral efficacy against Ichthyophthirius multififiliis infection

Zhao Zhang, Haibo Cui, Zhiqiang Zhang, Shenye Qu, Gaoxue Wang, Fei Ling

Summary: The study investigated the pharmacokinetics of magnolol in goldfish following different administration routes and found that oral administration of magnolol effectively controlled Ichthyophthirius multifiliis infection. The results indicated that magnolol could be a potential treatment for fish infections caused by I. multifiliis.

Amantadine, a promising therapeutic agent against viral encephalopathy and retinopathy

Song Zhu, Bo Miao, Yu-Zhou Zhang, De-Shou Wang, Gao-Xue Wang

Summary: Outbreaks of viral encephalopathy and retinopathy severely devastate aquaculture worldwide, with nervous necrosis virus (NNV) being the causative agent. Research suggests that amantadine may be a promising therapeutic agent against NNV, providing an effective strategy for controlling VER in fish at early developmental stages.

Inactivation efficacy and mechanism of pulsed corona discharge plasma on virus in water

Kaige Song, Hui Wang, Zhi Jiao, Guangzhou Qu, Weichao Chen, Gaoxue Wang, Tiecheng Wang, Zengqiang Zhang, Fei Ling

Summary: The study demonstrated that pulsed corona discharge plasma (PCDP) can effectively inactivate waterborne viruses, such as SVCV, by damaging their genome and structural proteins. The research also showed that the inactivation efficiency was significantly improved by high input energy density caused by voltage. This has implications for waterborne virus removal and the development of novel disinfection technologies.

Luteolin in Lonicera japonica inhibits the proliferation of white spot syndrome virus in the crayfish Procambarus clarkii

Hai-Feng Jiang, Cheng Chen, Xin-Yuan Jiang, Jing-Lei Shen, Fei Ling, Peng-Fei Li, Gao-Xue Wang

Summary: In this study, the efficacy of 12 herbal medicines in inhibiting the proliferation of White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV) was evaluated. Lonicera japonica extract was found to have the strongest inhibitory effect, and luteolin (LUT) was identified as the major bioactive compound. LUT showed a strong inhibitory effect on WSSV replication, decreased viral load, and increased the survival rate of WSSV-infected crayfish. It also modulated the expression of immunerelated genes, antioxidants, proinflammatory factors, and apoptosis-related genes.

Bo-Yang Li, Fei Yang, Zhong-Yu Zhang, Yu-Feng Shen, Tao Wang, Liang Zhao, Jia-Cheng Qin, Fei Ling, Gao-Xue Wang

Summary: In this study, the antiviral effects of 22 quinoline derivatives against Micropterus salmoides rhabdovirus (MSRV) were evaluated. 8-hydroxyquinoline was found to effectively inhibit MSRV in vitro and enhance survival rates in MSRV-infected fish in vivo. It also reduced viral loads in the infected fish.
