Summary: Chemotherapy-induced kidney damage, particularly in the context of CFZ treatment, remains a significant concern in cancer therapy. This study investigated the potential protective effect of Thymoquinone (TQ) against CFZ-induced nephrotoxicity in rats. The findings demonstrated that TQ administration significantly mitigated the negative effects of CFZ treatment on kidney function and oxidative stress, suggesting that TQ may serve as a potential therapeutic agent for preventing CFZ-induced kidney damage.

Summary: This study demonstrated the protective effect of thymoquinone (TQ), a natural compound, against benzo(a)pyrene (B(a)P)-induced lung carcinogenesis. TQ reduced tumor markers and reversed the abnormal changes related to lung cancer in mice. It also regulated apoptosis and cell proliferation markers. These results suggest the potential effectiveness of TQ as an antioxidant, antiproliferative, and apoptotic agent against B(a)P-induced lung tumorigenesis.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of dietary curcumin supplementation on hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-induced testicular oxidative damage in breeder roosters. The results showed that curcumin supplementation improved semen quality and testicular morphology, increased testosterone levels, and enhanced antioxidant capacities. Moreover, curcumin reversed the negative effects of H2O2 on spermatogenesis-related genes, antioxidant genes, and protein expressions, and normalized mRNA expressions of specific genes. In conclusion, dietary curcumin supplementation alleviates H2O2-induced oxidative damage and reproduction decline through the Nrf2 signaling pathway and anti-apoptotic effects.

Summary: This study investigates the response of litchi plants to chilling stress by analyzing the physiological and biochemical changes and constructing RNA-Seq libraries. A total of 2496 chilling-responsive genes were identified, including genes related to the antioxidant system, plant hormone signaling, and transcription factor encoding. The study also proposes a model for litchi plants' response to chilling stress based on the RNA-Seq data.

Summary: Severe temperature variations caused by global climate change have significant impacts on the survival and development of fish. This study investigates the potential effects of light wavelength, specifically blue LED, on cold shock in zebrafish. The results demonstrate that blue LED exposure mitigates the negative effects of cold shock on fish eyes by up-regulating antioxidant response and down-regulating apoptotic responses. Furthermore, cold shock also disrupts phototransduction cascade and circadian rhythm signals, causing inflammatory responses. Ten key genes related to circadian rhythm, phototransduction, and inflammatory responses were identified, suggesting their important role in protecting against cold stress.

Summary: The study investigated the mechanisms of cadmium tolerance in kenaf plants, revealing that GH exhibited stronger cadmium transport and accumulation abilities, detoxification capacities, and stable cell ultrastructure compared to YJ. Transcriptome analysis indicated that GH tends to activate gene expression to cope with cadmium stress, with differentially expressed genes enriched in various pathways related to antioxidant defense, heavy metal detoxification, and transcription factors.

Summary: This study optimized the ratio of UV filters in kenaf seed oil nanocarrier to develop a sunscreen formulation. The nanocarrier showed high encapsulation efficiency for UV filters and when added to a tocotrienol-rich cream, it exhibited no cytotoxicity and provided both sun protection and cellular antioxidant capacity. The application of nanocarriers in the cream also resulted in significant protein upregulation and downregulation, indicating its potential as a promising delivery system in sunscreen formulations.

Summary: Pine wilt disease caused by the nematode Bursaphelenchus xylophilus is highly damaging to East Asian pine forests. In this study, the response of PWN-resistant and -susceptible P. thunbergii to PWN inoculation was analyzed at the transcriptional level. Differential gene expression analysis revealed distinct strategies employed by the resistant and susceptible P. thunbergii in dealing with PWN infections. The results shed light on the mechanisms underlying resistance and susceptibility to PWN in P. thunbergii.

Summary: This study investigates the neuroprotective effect of germinated brown rice ethyl acetate extract (GBR-EA) on oxidative changes induced by a high-fat diet (HFD) in rats. GBR-EA supplementation improves lipid profile and serum antioxidant status, regulates the expression of antioxidant and inflammatory genes, and attenuates pro-inflammatory changes in the hippocampus. This study highlights the potential of GBR-EA to ameliorate neurodegenerative processes resulting from high cholesterol consumption.

Summary: By analyzing fifteen cultivars of paddy rice consumed in North West Nigeria, it was found that brown rice differed significantly from white rice in terms of nutritional composition and bioactive content, and possessed anti-diabetic and antioxidant effects. The study further showed that fruit flies fed with white rice exhibited higher glucose and trehalose levels and lower glycogen levels compared to those fed with brown rice, accompanied by increased expression of dACC and dPEPCK and decreased expression of dIRS. Sex differences were also observed in the nutrigenomic effects of white rice. These findings confirm that white rice consumption can disrupt fruit fly metabolism through insulin signaling distortion, glycogenolysis, and gluconeogenesis, while brown rice can prevent these metabolic changes possibly due to its richer nutritional composition.
