Summary: The roots of orchids associate with a variety of soil fungi, including a group called rhizoctonias that is most frequently found. However, there are also orchid species that target other fungal taxa with different phylogenetic positions and ecological traits. This study offers an evolutionary framework for understanding these symbiotic associations.

Summary: During a survey of woody litter fungi diversity in China and Thailand, three Hermatomyces species were collected from dead woody twigs. Two new species (H. turbinatus and H. jinghaensis) and a new record of H. sphaericus were identified through morphology and multigene analyses. Phylogenetic analyses supported the placement of these new taxa within the Hermatomycetaceae family.

Summary: This study investigated saprobic fungi associated with mango in Baoshan and Honghe of Yunnan Province, China. Morphological examinations and phylogenetic analyses of multigene sequences were used to identify fungal taxa. Several new taxa, including a new genus, four new species, and four new host and geographical records, were reported.

Summary: A new genus and species of asexual ascomycete, Parathozetella microsperma, has been described and illustrated from decaying plant material collected from rainforest areas in Mato Grosso and Para States. The new genus resembles Thozetella in several features, such as sporodochial conidiomata, presence of microawns, and enteroblastic monophialidic conidiogenesis that produces lunate conidia, but can be easily distinguished by the absence of setulae.

Summary: Little attention has been paid to the influence of host of origin on intraspecific phenotypic variation in saprobic fungi. In this study, using the model system Phlebiopsis gigantea, it was shown that isolates originating from different hosts exhibited significant differences in terms of growth rate and mitospore production. These findings indicate that a host-driven intraspecific phenotypic variation may occur in saprobic fungi.

Summary: This study explores the cultivable fungal community on the hair roots of Vaccinium spp. growing on decomposing wood in coniferous forests. The study finds that besides a few asexual ericoid mycorrhizal fungi, there are also sexually reproducing saprobic fungi related to ericoid mycorrhizal fungi, which have positive effects on host plant growth. These findings are important for understanding the ecology and evolution of ericoid mycorrhizal fungi.
