Summary: This qualitative review explores the preoperative concerns of general surgery patients, highlighting the main themes of uncertainty before surgery, the postoperative recovery process, and the standard of care. Patients often worry about the potential impacts of surgery on their health and recovery, and their trust in Healthcare Professionals can be compromised when they perceive a deficiency in the standard of care. Effective preoperative education, individualized communication, and social support can help address these concerns and improve the perioperative experience for patients.

Summary: In patients undergoing elective anorectal surgery, over half receive preoperative laboratory testing (PLT).
There was no difference in postoperative complication rates between patients who did or did not receive testing, indicating a need for more judicious use of PLT in this population.

Summary: The present study found that preoperative music intervention could reduce self-reported pain levels during cataract surgery and in the early postoperative period, as well as decrease anxiety levels. There was also a significant correlation between anxiety levels and intraoperative pain levels.

Summary: Risk stratification prior to major vascular surgery plays a crucial role in predicting perioperative major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE). Comorbidities such as coronary artery disease, heart failure, left-sided valvular heart disease, and significant arrhythmic burden are associated with higher risk of perioperative MACE. Different cardiac risk indices, noninvasive and invasive cardiac testing, and perioperative pharmacotherapies have strengths and weaknesses in predicting risk.

Summary: The effect of preoperative meibomian gland status on dry eye symptoms after corneal refractive surgery was investigated. The results showed that the grade of meibomian gland loss before surgery was positively correlated with dry eye symptoms after surgery. Dry eye symptoms peaked at 1 month postoperatively and then gradually decreased. At different time points postoperatively, group 3 had significantly higher dry eye symptoms than group 1, and group 2 had higher symptoms than group 1 at 3 and 6 months postoperatively.

Summary: This study assessed the impact of trisomy 21 on morbidity, mortality, and resource use in patients with cavopulmonary connections. The results showed that patients with T21 had significantly higher rates of adverse events and resource utilization compared to non-T21 patients after Glenn and Fontan procedures.

Summary: This article discusses the impact of frailty assessment on gynecological cancer surgery outcomes, showing that frail patients are more likely to experience postoperative complications and worse oncologic outcomes. The modified frailty index (mFI) is the most widely used tool and tailored therapeutic strategies should be considered for patients with 3 or more frailty defining items.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of preoperative immunonutrition on in-hospital length of stay in patients undergoing laparoscopic colorectal cancer resection under an ERAS program. The results showed that preoperative immunonutrition was associated with significantly shorter length of stay. No significant differences were observed in secondary outcomes.

Summary: Preoperative imaging is useful in evaluating the risk of internal carotid artery (ICA) medialization in children with 22q11 Deletion Syndrome (22qDS) undergoing velopharyngeal dysfunction (VPD) surgery. However, only a minority of cases lead to surgical modification. Further studies are needed to compare outcomes in children with and without preoperative imaging.

Summary: This study investigated the incidence of preoperative dry eye and related factors in patients undergoing corneal refractive surgery for myopia correction. The results showed that dry eye patients were more likely to be male, wear contact lenses, and have higher diopter levels. Contact lens wear and diopter level were identified as influencing factors for dry eye disease.

Summary: This study aims to understand the prevalence of positive toxicology screening in bariatric surgical patients and examine the association between positive results and surgical outcomes. The results showed no association between positive toxicology screening and preoperative length, readmissions, or weight loss. Therefore, toxicology screening prior to bariatric surgery may be an unnecessary burden on patients and healthcare.
