This study proposes an agent-based model to investigate the development of residents' cooperative behavior in neighborhood renewal. The results show that government intervention and management of residents' social relationships play a crucial role in achieving better outcomes. The study also highlights the influence of social network structures on residents' cooperative behavior.
The cooperative behavior of residents is complex and influenced by their complicated social relationships. This complexity is especially noticeable in neighborhood renewal, so the government does not know how to promote residents' cooperative behavior. Therefore, this study proposes an agent-based model (ABM) to investigate the development of residents' cooperative behavior in neighborhood renewal. Based on a questionnaire survey among residents of old neighborhoods in China, the parameters of ABM were determined in this study. Then, controlled experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of general trust among residents and govern-ment control of neighborhood renewal on cooperation patterns in renewal projects. In addition, this study ex-amines the effects of different types of social network structures (small-world, scale-free, and random networks) on the evolution of residents' cooperative behaviors. The simulation results show that when residents' initial willingness to agree to renewal projects is high, their close social relationships need to be managed by the government to achieve better outcomes. Conversely, if initial willingness is low, residents' close relationships may pose a challenge to the government. In addition, government-led renewal projects should be encouraged to a greater extent. This study confirms that the different social network structures have an influence on the devel-opment of residents' cooperative behavior. The results of this study provide concrete evidence for understanding the factors that contribute to the emergence of residents' cooperative behavior and for studying the effects of government intervention on neighborhood renewal projects. In addition, the results of this study provide theoretical support for future studies of residents' social network structures.

The change in temporal trend and spatial distribution of CO2 emissions of China's public and commercial buildings

Kairui You, Yanhui Yu, Weiguang Cai, Zhengxuan Liu

Summary: This study analyzed the changes in CO2 emissions and their driving factors in China's commercial and public building sector from a temporal and spatial perspective, providing insights for developing equitable and effective decarbonization strategies. The results showed that the sector has not yet reached its CO2 emissions peak in the temporal dimension, while the gravity center has moved southwestward in the spatial dimension. The study also reviewed decarbonization strategies and provided policy implications.

Modeling carbon emission trend in China's building sector to year 2060

Kairui You, Hong Ren, Weiguang Cai, Ruopeng Huang, Yuanli Li

Summary: This study developed an innovative carbon emissions simulation model that considers climate area, building type, and end-use service to understand the carbon emission trend and tap the potential of emission mitigation. The results indicate the need for stronger strategies in China's building sector to achieve the carbon peak goal. To achieve carbon neutrality, collective efforts are required, with decarbonization of electricity generation, building stock regulation, and residential green behavior guidance being the top three contributors to carbon abatement.

A cross-scale 'material-component-system' framework for transition towards zero-carbon buildings and districts with low, medium and high-temperature phase change materials

Yuekuan Zhou, Zhengxuan Liu

Summary: Transition towards a carbon-neutral district energy community requires carbon elimination and offsetting strategies, which can be achieved by using phase change materials (PCMs) with substantial potential latent energy density. However, there is currently an ambiguous roadmap for the application of PCMs in carbon-neutral transition, making a comprehensive review on latent thermal storage necessary.

Performance evaluation of ventilative cooling systems for buildings under different control parameters and strategies

Yan Hu, Zhengxuan Liu, Zhengtao Ai, Guoqiang Zhang

Summary: Ventilative cooling is an energy-saving technology that improves indoor air quality while reducing thermal discomfort and overheating risk in buildings. However, the lack of an optimal control strategy hinders its widespread application. This study developed a building model to evaluate the performance of ventilative cooling systems in different cities of China. The findings suggest that an adaptive thermal comfort model may not be optimal in terms of energy efficiency, and considering radiant temperature is important for accurate energy usage estimation. The study also highlights the importance of eliminating drawbacks in the control limits to effectively harness the energy-saving potential of ventilative cooling.

The estimation of carbon imbalance and driving factors in China's urban residential building sector

Kairui You, Liu Chen, Ruopeng Huang

Summary: Understanding the imbalance of carbon emissions in the urban residential building (URB) sector is crucial for developing equitable and effective emission reduction policies. This study analyzes the carbon emissions and per unit area carbon emissions imbalance in URB from 2005 to 2019 using the Kaya identity and Zenga index. The results show that the imbalance is primarily driven by population and energy consumption unit area, with climate having a greater impact on inter-group imbalance. These findings and suggested policies can aid in formulating fair and effective provincial decarbonization responsibilities and emission mitigation implementation policies.

Modeling residents' multidimensional social capital in China's neighborhood renewal projects: SEM and MIMIC approaches

Ruopeng Huang, Fangyun Xie, Xinyue Fu, Wenli Liu

Summary: Neighborhood renewal is a crucial strategy for sustainable urban development in China, yet it encounters social challenges due to the diversity of residents' interests and complex relationships. However, there is limited research on intra-resident relations and conflicts in China. This study utilizes social capital to provide a deeper understanding of resident relationships in neighborhood renewal. The findings highlight the positive impact of structural social capital on relational and cognitive social capital, with relational social capital playing a mediating role. The study contributes to the understanding of residents' social systems in neighborhood renewal and provides theoretical support for neighborhood renewal policies in China and beyond.

Promoting the Application of Off-Site Construction in China's Residential Building Industry from the Angle of Ecosystem

Fangyun Xie, Xinyue Fu, Ruopeng Huang

Summary: This paper develops a new analytical lens by deconstructing ecosystem concepts to conceptualize China's residential building industry ecosystem (RBI-ECO) and proposes three hypotheses. The results show that the current structure of RBI-ECO does not support the development of off-site construction (OSC) due to imbalanced performance of different types of enterprises, lack of cooperation, moral risks, competition, and a fragmented supply chain. To promote the application of OSC, the government can implement mandatory policies and concrete measures, establish a designer-led mechanism, motivate enterprises to transform, and enhance learning and education for OSC enterprise managers.
