This study reveals that employee proactivity has a positive predictive effect on customers' shopping behavior and satisfaction. The effect is mediated by customers' perceptions of employee warmth and competence and is applicable to different samples and paradigms. High levels of proactivity can compensate for the negative aspects of waiting.
Employee proactivity has been discussed as a key predictor of firm success and organizational performance. However, previous proactivity research has rarely focused on customers, and the few available proactivity studies from retail settings are either cross-sectional, solely based on subjective outcomes (e.g. customer satisfaction) or restricted to aggregated data of objective outcomes (e.g. profits per store). We investigate the causal effect of employee proactivity in retail service encounters on customers' actual purchase behaviour and satisfaction ratings at the fine-grained level of individual customers. By integrating theories on social perception with prior proactivity findings, we find that employee proactivity positively predicts customers' shopping responses. This finding extends from correlational to experimental designs across sample types and paradigms, is replicated in actual retail settings, and is mediated by customers' perceptions of employee warmth and competence. Furthermore, the effect generalizes across several focal outcomes, including behavioural variables (spending and purchase likelihood), and is moderated by the time to employee-initiated contact in a way that goes against customers' own beliefs. In sum, the present research quantifies the financial consequences of employee proactivity and indicates that in ordinary retail service encounters, high proactivity can compensate for delays, thus counteracting the aversive aspects of waiting.

Mehmood Khan, Mian M. Ajmal, Fauzia Jabeen, Shalini Talwar, Amandeep Dhir

Summary: With the increasing attention on sustainability due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a significant rise in interest in the green supply chain. This study, utilizing the resource-based view theory, provides deeper insights into the integration of resource-based characteristics that can facilitate a smooth transition from traditional to green supply chains, as well as enhance the effectiveness of existing green supply chains. The findings confirm the positive associations between supply chain connectivity, supply chain information sharing, top management commitment, green procurement and logistics acceptance, and green supply chain management. Moreover, the study identifies the serial mediation effect of top management commitment and green procurement and logistics acceptance on the relationship between supply chain connectivity and information sharing with green supply chain management. This study offers practical insights and contributes to the development of a novel green supply chain management scale.

Stereotypes, same-sex struggles, and sustainable shopping: intrasexual competition mediates sex differences in green consumption values

Tobias Otterbring

Summary: The present study investigates the difference in green consumption values between male and female consumers and whether this difference can be explained by levels of intrasexual competition. The study finds that male consumers exhibit higher levels of intrasexual competition and have weaker support for green consumption values. Importantly, the study shows that men's inferiority irritation and their propensity to compete with same-sex rivals drive them away from green consumption, while women's weaker willingness to compete with same-sex rivals increases their inclination towards green consumption.
