Summary: Measuring and analysing carbon leakage are important for improving environmental responsibility. This study used the origin-destination approach and spatial spillover analysis to explore the factors of China's interprovincial carbon leakage. The results showed the opposite effects of economic development and environmental regulations on carbon leakage. Provinces with high-energy intensity and abundant energy resources were mainly net-exporters of carbon, while provinces with underdeveloped secondary industries were net-importers. Positive spillover effects of energy intensity were found at the origin, and negative effects at the destination.

Summary: This study used a multiregional input-output (MRIO) model and structural decomposition analysis (SDA) to examine the spatiotemporal evolution and driving forces of embodied carbon emissions in Shanxi Province, China. The study revealed that Shanxi had significant net embodied carbon outflow in interprovincial trade, driven by technological level and trade demand. The highest contributors to net embodied carbon outflow were electricity and heat production and supply, metal smelting and rolling processing, and petroleum processing, coking, and nuclear fuel processing. The study provides insights for formulating carbon reduction policies in energy-rich regions.

Summary: This study assessed the situation and trends of sectoral CO2 emissions in China from 2002 to 2017 using a hybrid input-output model. Demand-side drivers of sectorial embodied CO2 emissions were discussed, and a CO2 emission evaluation index was defined for ranking and identifying key sectors for CO2 emissions. Targeted policy suggestions were provided, including promoting renewable energy consumption and addressing the CO2 emission potential of the tertiary industry.

The reduction in consumption growth and improvement in consumption quality lead to a decrease in PM2.5 emissions.

Summary: Assessing plastics usage and driving forces is crucial for mitigating their environmental impact. Current research lacks assessment of plastics usage in the upper supply chain, leading to misconceptions about efficiency and subpar policy design. In this study, an Environmental Extend Input-Output Model is used to evaluate plastics usage in China, finding that embodied plastics consumption is significant and import in this form is 5.3 times higher than direct import. Additionally, the study identifies the unexpected high consumption of plastics in the Public and Other Services Sector and a shift in consumption patterns towards service-oriented industries.

Summary: Studying the production intensity of ecological footprint is crucial in the ecological compensation strategy for designated industries, especially in identifying high-polluting industries. Environment-extended input-output (EE-IO) tables are useful for analyzing pollution and land occupation within economic sectors. By using ecological footprint (EF) and input-output tables (IOTs), this study analyzed China's EFPI and its flow among sectors in 2005, 2010, and 2015. The results showed a downward trend in the average total pollution coefficient (TPC) component and net embodied EFPI transfers from 2005 to 2015. The electricity, heat, gas, and water sector (S11) and the agriculture sector (S1) had significant contributions to TPC and net embodied EFPI transfers. Recommendations were made to impose an ecological tax and control high-EFPI industries for optimization.

Summary: Freight transport in China has become increasingly important in terms of CO2 and air pollutant emissions, but few studies have used consumption-based methods to assess its environmental impact. Using multi-regional input-output tables, this study employs structural path analysis to determine the link between interprovincial trade-related freight turnover and responsible sectors of final consumption. The findings reveal significant growth in interprovincial trade turnover and associated emissions, with final consumption in equipment, construction, service, and food driving the most freight turnover. Optimizing China's industrial geographical layout and trade structure is essential to reduce CO2 emissions associated with the freight transport system.
