When They Hand You Your Uniform, They Forget to Say, 'Hand Me Your Soul': Incidents and Impacts of Institutional Betrayal in Canadian Police Services

Summary: This interdisciplinary study combines Erving Goffman's sociological theory and the psychological framework of institutional betrayal to examine how gendered and racialized power structures are maintained in Canadian policing. Through in-depth interviews with police officers and a national survey, it reveals that strict institutional requirements and various mechanisms of institutional betrayal silence, discredit, and minimize reports of workplace abuse. This results in significant negative impacts on the mental health, retention rates, and willingness to report workplace abuse of racialized women, men, and white women. Overall, the study highlights the presence of systemic racism and sexism within Canadian police services, as well as the institutional knowledge, coordinated containment of complaints, and resistance to meaningful change.

Summary: The technical limitations of ureteroscopic biopsy are believed to contribute to the high upgrading rate in upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC). However, the impact of tumor specific factors on upgrading has not been investigated. This study found that high-grade and low-grade biopsy results on ureteroscopy are associated with different biological and clinical features of UTUC tumors.

The results reveal that RASP has better safety and functional outcomes in the treatment of bladder prostatic obstruction caused by large prostate glands.

Use of a Schelin Catheter for analgesia during Rezum treatment of the prostate

Summary: In order to make Rezum treatment (RT) less invasive, we evaluated the advantages and feasibility of transurethral intraprostatic anesthesia (TUIA) via Schelin Catheter (TM) (SC). We included 20 men with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), who underwent RT using TUIA via SC. The patients rated their pain prior to the procedure on a numeric rating scale (NRS) ranging from 0 to 10, with 0 indicating no pain and 10 indicating the worst pain. The median NRS score ranged from 0 to 3. No procedure-related complications were reported.

Summary: The study aimed to assess the impact of event-free survival duration on cancer-specific mortality (CSM) in nonmetastatic muscle-invasive squamous cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder after radical cystectomy (RC). The researchers identified RC patients with this type of cancer through a database and analyzed their data using Cox regression models. The results showed that event-free status at 24 months was associated with significantly higher CSM-free survival compared to baseline predictions. This effect was most pronounced in patients with TanyN1-3 and T4N0, intermediate in T3N0, and still important but more modest in T2N0.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence and outcome of COVID-19 in a large series of MCs patients, as well as the safety and immunogenicity of COVID-19 vaccines. The results showed a significantly higher prevalence of COVID-19 in MCs patients compared to the general population, and the use of immunomodulators was associated with an increased risk of infection. Additionally, MCs patients with COVID-19 had a higher mortality rate, and older age was correlated with worse COVID-19 outcomes. The vaccination immunogenicity was impaired in MCs patients, and certain immunomodulators hindered the vaccine-induced immune response.

Summary: In this study, the impact of 5-alpha reductase inhibitors (5-ARI) on the perioperative and functional outcomes of 180-Watt XPS GreenLight photovaporization of the prostate (PVP) was investigated. The findings suggest that preoperative 5-ARI is not associated with any clinically significant different perioperative or functional outcomes for GreenLight PVP.
