Aim and background: Obesity is a multifactorial disease in which environmental and genetic factors play an integrated role. Determining such target genes will help to elucidate the mechanisms underlying complex diseases such as obesity and diabetes which are usually seen together. Present study investigates the expression levels of STEAP4 and HIF-1 alpha in visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissue. Patients and methods: 30(6 M) morbidly obese patients undergoing bariatric surgery were included in the study. The patients were grouped according to the BMI as Group I (BMI <50 kg/m(2)) and Group II (BMI >= 50 kg/m(2)). Samples from visceral (omentum) and subcutaneous adipose tissues were obtained from each patient and real-time PCR (qPCR) was carried out for STEAP4 and HIF-1 alpha gene expressions. Correlations between expression levels and clinical parameters were analyzed. Results: Mean age of the patients recruited to the study was 37.4 (18-64) years. Mean BMI was 46 (36-60) kg/m(2). STEAP4 expression in visceral adipose tissue was significantly higher than subcutaneous tissue. Visceral STEAP4 expression was also found to be reduced with increased BMI. It was also lower in patients with HbA(1)C over 6. Furthermore, expression of subcutaneous and visceral HIF-1 alpha was significantly higher in Group II. There was a significant correlation between BMI, glycosylated hemoglobin, STEAP4 and HIF-1 alpha gene expressioh. Conclusions: Obesity and related disease are linked with the fact that there is a low grade inflammation in the adipose tissue of the obese individuals. Counter-regulatory processes such as STEAP4 protein family are overwhelmed by the proinflammatory stimuli. HIF-1 alpha expression is increased due to tissue hypoxia and pro-inflammatory stimuli in the obese individuals, which results in increased visceral STEAP4 expressions. (c) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Summary: Portal vein anastomotic complications related to size discrepancy are important causes of morbidity and mortality in pediatric liver transplantation. The use of interposed vein grafts can overcome portal flow problems, with preoperative portal vein thrombosis and insufficient flow being important factors affecting the success of liver transplant in children.

Summary: Rectal prolapse, defined as the protrusion of mucosa or full-thickness rectal wall through the anal canal, negatively impacts quality of life and should be treated surgically once diagnosed. The surgical approach depends on patient compliance and surgical team experience. Chronic constipation may lead to disproportionately large rectal prolapse.

Evaluation of the Turkish Population's Perspective on COVID-19 Vaccine Hesitancy and Routine Childhood Vaccine Applications: National Survey Study

Sami Akbulut, Gulseda Boz, Ali Ozer, Tevfik Tolga Sahin, Cemil Colak

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the attitude of the Turkish population towards COVID-19 vaccines and the reasons for vaccine hesitancy. Results showed that 58.4% of participants had hesitations towards COVID-19 vaccination and 19.6% had hesitations towards all childhood vaccinations. Those who did not receive the COVID-19 vaccine or had hesitations towards it had higher scores on the VHS-P and AVS-LF scales. Similarly, those who did not vaccinate their children or had hesitations towards childhood vaccinations also had higher scores on the VHS-P and AVS-LF scales.

Summary: The aim of this study was to compare liver transplant recipients with and without hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in terms of COVID-19-related depression, anxiety, and stress. The results showed that patients without HCC, females, those with chronic diseases, those exposed to COVID-19, and those not vaccinated against COVID-19 were more likely to experience anxiety, depression, and stress. These results are reliable.

Summary: Differentiating primary and secondary causes of headaches in emergency situations is crucial, as secondary headaches may have serious underlying neurological causes. This study aimed to identify red flags in neuroimaging for life-threatening secondary causes in patients with headache complaints. It found that factors like severe headache, sudden onset, neurological deficits, and age over 50 are warning criteria that require thorough imaging evaluation, including both CT and MRI scans.
