This study proposes a method for measuring color differences in rock samples, dividing rock images into color profiles using image processing and analysis techniques, and evaluating color differences between rock samples.
Constituent rocks of Cultural Heritage monuments and buildings are of mixed mineral compositions. For materials with homogeneous color properties, colorimetric evaluation is a well-established task. The colorimetric similarity of heterogeneous surfaces is difficult to measure due to the uneven distribution of minerals with different colors. The present work proposes a methodology for color difference calculation, exemplified on granite samples. The methodology proposed includes a technique to divide the rock images into color profiles using multivariate analysis and clustering. The differences between rock samples are evaluated (i) in average color profile distances, (ii) in the tone difference, and (iii) in the color profile distribution on the surface. The method proposed is appropriate for in-situ measurements using widely available digital imaging. (c) 2023 The Author(s). Summary: Micro-CT (μCT) has been increasingly used in the cultural heritage sector to understand past cultures and their materials. In the case of the Gjellestad ship from the Viking Age, μCT was used to document and conserve the deteriorated organic and metallic materials. A georeferencing system was developed to retain important stratigraphic and position information, allowing for spatial positioning using 3D GIS. The use of μCT has shown positive impact on the documentation, conservation, and reconstruction of cultural heritage.
